The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.

Remember My Chains: The Cost and Comfort of the Gospel

If you read through the book of Colossians, you will find yourself soaring through some of the most breathtaking theology in the entire New Testament. The Apostle Paul paints a magnificent picture of Jesus: He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation, and the one in whom all things hold together.

But as the letter comes to a close, Paul does something striking. He pulls us out of the heavenly heights and brings us face-to-face with his immediate reality.

In the very last verse, he writes:

“I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.” — Colossians 4:18

Imagine the scene. Throughout the letter, Paul had likely been dictating his thoughts to a scribe—possibly Timothy. But as the parchment is about to be rolled up and sent to the church at Colossae, Paul takes the quill into his own hand to sign his name. As his hand moves across the papyrus, the heavy iron shackles bound to his wrists clank against the table. The sound of iron against stone. The physical restriction of a Roman prison.

Why does Paul end his masterpiece with such a raw, abrupt phrase? Why tell them to “remember my chains”?

1. A Call to Intercession, Not Pity

Paul was not looking for a pity party. He never wanted the church to shift its gaze from the absolute sufficiency of Jesus to the temporary suffering of His servant. Instead, this was a powerful battle cry for intercessory prayer.

Earlier in the same chapter, Paul asked the Colossians to pray that God would open a door for the Word so he could continue proclaiming the mystery of Christ. When he tells them to remember his chains, he is reminding them that the spiritual war is real. He is asking his brothers and sisters to carry the weight of his imprisonment with him through prayer, anchoring his physical confinement to their spiritual freedom in Christ.

2. The Hard Reality of a True Gospel

We live in a culture—and sometimes a church culture—that heavily promotes comfort, convenience, and prosperity. It is easy to slide into the false belief that if we are following God faithfully, our lives will be smooth sailing.

Paul’s chains shatter that illusion. His shackles remind us that true devotion to the gospel often comes with a steep cost. He suffered loss of freedom, comfort, and physical safety, yet he did not recoil in shame. His chains bore the authority of a man who didn’t just preach the truth; he lived it out to the very end. The advance of the gospel has always met opposition, but history shows us that while the messenger can be bound, the Word of God is never chained.

3. Remembering the Global Body

When we read Colossians today, Paul’s words bridge the centuries to convict our modern hearts. Today, millions of believers around the globe are living out Paul’s reality. They face physical violence, imprisonment, social isolation, and institutional persecution simply for declaring that Jesus is Lord.

To “remember the chains” means we cannot afford to live isolated, comfortable lives wrapped up only in our own minor inconveniences. It calls us to look beyond our immediate surroundings, to stand in solidarity with the persecuted global church, and to let our personal freedom be a catalyst for bold faith rather than spiritual laziness.

Moving Forward in Grace

Paul pairs the heavy phrase “remember my chains” with the beautiful benediction: “Grace be with you.” He knew that the only way to endure hardships, to pray faithfully for others, and to stand mature in the faith was through the sustaining, active grace of God.

Whatever “chains” or trials you are facing today—whether they are physical health struggles, grief, or relational hardships—remember that your current circumstances do not limit God’s power. Let us stand firm, serve faithfully, and keep our eyes fixed on the One who broke the ultimate chains of sin and death.

A Closing Prayer

Holy and Almighty God,

We praise You today for the enduring power of Your Gospel, which cannot be contained by walls, bars, or iron chains. Thank You for the bold testimony of the Apostle Paul, who served You with joy and constancy even from a prison cell.

Lord, we commit today to remember those in chains. We lift up our brothers and sisters across the world who are facing persecution, hatred, and imprisonment for Your Name’s sake. Give them physical strength, supernatural peace, and an unshakeable courage to witness to their captors. Let them know they are not forgotten by You, nor by us, their spiritual family.

Forgive us for the times we take our freedom and comfort for granted. Awake our hearts from complacency. Help us to take up our crosses daily and live entirely surrendered to Your Kingdom, holding loosely to the conveniences of this world. May Your active grace sustain us through every trial, and may our lives be a living testimony of Your love.

In the mighty and unchained name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
