(KJV) Colossians 1:15
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
The Supreme Heir: Understanding Christ as the Firstborn
When we read that Jesus is “the firstborn over all creation” in Colossians 1:15, it is easy to misunderstand the term if we apply a modern definition. Paul is not teaching that Christ was the first being created. Instead, he is drawing directly from an Old Testament concept of authority and position.
In the ancient world, “firstborn” signified status rather than birth order. It designated the supreme heir, the one who held the highest position of honor, authority, and inheritance within the family.
What “Firstborn” Truly Means
Scripture frequently uses this term to denote rank and privilege rather than chronology:
- Exodus 4:22: God calls the nation of Israel His “firstborn son” because of their chosen, exalted position among the nations.
- Jeremiah 31:9: Ephraim is called the “firstborn,” even though Manasseh was born first, highlighting Ephraim’s superior status.
As the eternal Son of God, Jesus is the supreme heir and ruler of all creation (Colossians 1:18; Hebrews 1:1-2). He does not belong to the created order; He stands completely above it.
The Sovereignty of the Son
Because Jesus is the ultimate heir, He holds absolute sovereignty. He possesses complete authority, control, and power to do exactly as He desires (Colossians 1:16; Matthew 28:18).
Nothing falls outside of His jurisdiction. Every ruler, power, and molecule in the universe answers to Him (Colossians 2:9-10; 1 Peter 3:22). When life feels chaotic or beyond our control, we can rest securely knowing that our Savior is the ultimate King, holding all things together by His power.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We bow before You today in awe of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for revealing Him to us not just as our Savior, but as the supreme ruler and heir of all creation. Forgive us for the times we forget His absolute authority and allow worry to take root in our hearts.
We declare today that Jesus is sovereign over our lives, our families, and our future. We submit to His perfect control and trust in His unmatched power. May our lives honor Him as the Firstborn, the One who holds preeminence in all things.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
