START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Colossians 1:5
For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;
The Unshakable Anchor: Hope That Is Stored Up For You
In a world driven by constant change, it is easy to feel spiritually exhausted. We pour our energy into our daily tasks, our families, and our ministries, but occasionally we find our reservoirs running dry. When the day-to-day grind wears down our resolve, where do we find the fuel to keep loving others and holding onto our faith?
The Apostle Paul gives us a beautiful, life-altering answer in his letter to the Colossians. In Colossians 1:5, he speaks of “the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel.”
The Source of Faith and Love
It is easy to view faith, hope, and love as three separate spiritual goals to cross off a checklist. However, Paul reveals an interconnected relationship here: your active faith in Christ Jesus and your genuine love for others are actually fueled by hope.
When you know—with absolute certainty—that your ultimate future is secure, it frees you up to live generously today. You don’t have to desperately hoard your time, affection, or resources because you know your ultimate inheritance is completely safe. Hope is the invisible engine that drives our visible love.
What Does “Stored Up” Mean?
The Greek concept Paul uses for “stored up” (or “laid up”) refers to something reserved, safely locked away, and kept secure for the rightful owner.
- It is safe from earthly decay: Unlike a bank account, a career path, or our physical health, this hope cannot be diminished by inflation, corporate restructuring, or tragic news.
- It is guaranteed by God: It is anchored in heaven, meaning its value is entirely independent of how turbulent your current circumstances look.
- It is a present reality: Even though it is fully realized in the future, the knowledge of this security changes how you experience peace and joy right now.
This isn’t wishful thinking or crossing our fingers. This is a certain, unbending reality rooted in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and communicated through the truth of the gospel.
Living from Abundance, Not Emptiness
If you are feeling drained today, look upward at what is reserved specifically for you. Your standing as a child of God is secure. Your eternity is locked in. Your triumph in Christ is already a finished historical reality.
When we shift our focus from what we might lose on earth to what we have already gained in heaven, our perspective transforms. We find a fresh, supernatural wind of faith to trust God with our impossible situations, and a renewed capacity to love the people around us.
A Closing Prayer
Almighty and Ever-Living Father,
We thank You for the incredible wealth of Your grace and the true message of the gospel that has transformed our hearts. Lord, when our eyes are fixed solely on the struggles of this world, remind us of the glorious, unbending hope that is stored up for us in heaven.
Forgive us for the times we live out of spiritual poverty rather than the infinite abundance of Your promises. Anchor our souls in Your heavenly reality so deeply that a dynamic, unshakeable faith and a radical, selfless love naturally spring up within us toward everyone we meet. Let Your truth bear fruit in our lives today, giving us the strength to walk worthy of You and bring glory to Your name.
In the powerful and matchless name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
