START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Colossians 3:2
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Fixed on the Eternal: What It Means to Set Your Mind on Things Above
We live in a world that constantly fights for our attention. From the endless scroll of social media to the daily pressures of career, finance, and relationships, it is incredibly easy to let our minds become consumed by the temporary.
But in Colossians 3:2, we are given a powerful, counter-cultural command: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
This isn’t an invitation to escape reality or ignore our daily responsibilities. Instead, it is a call to completely shift our perspective. Because our lives and identities as Christians are now wrapped up in our relationship with Christ, we must set our minds on spiritual matters and let our attitudes be determined by things above.
Seeing Through an Eternal Lens
When we fix our thoughts on heavenly things, it changes how we live on earth. Our greatest affections and priorities should center on things that will last forever, shifting our greatest efforts toward storing up “treasures in heaven” rather than temporary wealth.
Setting our minds on things above means we choose to value, judge, and consider everything from an eternal and heavenly perspective.
According to Colossians 3, this mental shift directly impacts three core areas of our daily walk:
- Our Pursuits: We actively seek spiritual growth and intimacy with God.
- Our Boundaries: We resist sin and put off habits that belong to our old way of life.
- Our Character: We intentionally put on the character of Christ—compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Heaven’s Resources for Earth’s Struggles
Living an eternity-minded life can feel overwhelming in a world designed to distract us. The beautiful truth is that we do not have to do it in our own strength.
In our pursuit of eternal goals, Christ has made available to us the resources of heaven. He provides these spiritual riches for those who earnestly ask, seek, and continue to knock. You have access to His peace, His wisdom, and His Holy Spirit every single day.
If we remain true to Christ, we can live with a deep, unshakable confidence. Our temporary struggles on earth pale in comparison to the glory, honor, and reward that await us with Him in heaven.
Today, let’s take a deep breath, look past the immediate noise, and reset our focus on the One who holds eternity.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for anchoring my identity securely in Christ. Forgive me for the times I allow the distractions, worries, and temporary pleasures of this world to consume my thoughts. Today, I intentionally choose to set my mind on things above.
Help me to view my life, my challenges, and my relationships through an eternal lens. Grant me the grace to pursue spiritual growth, resist temptation, and reflect the character of Jesus to everyone I meet. Thank You for making the boundless resources of heaven available to me today. Keep my heart fixed on Your eternal promises, confident in the hope and reward I have in You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
