(KJV) Colossians 1:18

And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Firstborn From Among the Dead: The Power and Hope of Colossians 1:18

In the tapestry of the New Testament, few titles given to Jesus Christ carry as much theological weight and triumphant hope as the one found in Colossians 1:18: “And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.”

But what does it truly mean for Jesus to be the “firstborn from among the dead,” and why does it change everything for us today?

A Resurrection Like No Other

To understand the magnitude of this title, we have to look at history. The Bible records several instances where people were miraculously raised from the dead:

While these miracles were astonishing, they were ultimately resuscitations. Every single one of these people eventually grew old and died again.

Jesus’ resurrection was entirely different. As the firstborn from among the dead, Jesus Christ was the very first to rise with a spiritual, glorified, and immortal body (1 Corinthians 15:20). Death no longer has dominion over Him. He did not just conquer death for a few more years; He defeated it eternally.

The Birth of the Church and His Supremacy

The moment Christ stepped out of the tomb, the cosmic landscape shifted. On the day of His resurrection, Jesus became the head of the church—the worldwide, all-time community of all true followers of Christ.

This New Testament church was ignited when the disciples received the Holy Spirit, binding believers across generations and geographies into one spiritual body. Because He is the first to conquer the grave, He holds the ultimate position of authority, honor, and supremacy over this body. He is our source of life, guidance, and purpose.

Our Blessed Hope: The Final Resurrection

Christ being the “firstborn” implies that there are more to follow. His resurrection is the guarantee—the firstfruits—of a final, universal resurrection (John 5:28-29).

The fact that He rose gives a blessed and concrete hope to everyone who trusts in Him:

  • For those who accept Him: The resurrection guarantees a future raised to eternal life, free from pain, sin, and decay, spent in the glorious presence of God.
  • A solemn reality: Scripture also reminds us of the weight of eternity. While Christ died for all and all will be raised, those who reject Him face a resurrection of eternal punishment and separation from God.

Because He lives, we can face tomorrow with unwavering certainty. Our graves are not the end of our stories; they are merely the thresholds to our eternal home.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We praise You today for the ultimate victory won by Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for revealing Him to us as the firstborn from among the dead—the pioneer of our faith who broke the power of the grave once and for all. Thank You that His sacrifice was enough to cover our sins, and His resurrection is the solid rock upon which our eternal hope stands.

Lord, we ask that You anchor our hearts in this blessed truth. When we face the trials, sickness, and losses of this world, remind us that the story does not end in the valley of the shadow of death. Fill us with the Holy Spirit so that we may live as vibrant, faithful members of His body, the Church, pointing a broken world toward His supremacy.

We pray for those who do not yet know the life-giving power of Christ. Soften hearts, open blind eyes, and draw people to salvation so they too may experience the joy of resurrection to eternal life. Keep our eyes fixed on eternity, watching expectively for the day when He returns.

In the mighty and victorious name of Jesus, our Living Savior, we pray, Amen.
