(KJV) Colossians 1:19

For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

All His Fullness Dwells in Him: Understanding Christ’s Complete Deity

When we look at Jesus, what do we actually see? Is He just a great moral teacher, a wise prophet, or a good man who showed us how to live?

In his letter to the Colossians, the Apostle Paul shatters these limited perspectives with a truth so profound it reshapes our entire reality: “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him” (Colossians 1:19).

Paul describes the deity of Christ—the fact that He is fully God—in the simplest, yet most staggering terms. He leaves no room for half-measures or compromise. To know Jesus is to know God Himself.

The Totality of God in Christ

The word “fullness” (pleroma in the original Greek) was a heavyweight term in the ancient world. It meant completeness, totality, and the full measure of something. Paul uses it intentionally to combat early false teachings that suggested Jesus was merely a stepping stone to God, or just one of many spiritual beings.

Paul’s message is clear: The totality and completeness of God, with all His powers, attributes, and characteristics, dwell permanently within Christ.

Nothing of God’s character is missing in Jesus.

  • Want to know the depth of God’s love? Look at the cross.
  • Want to see the power of God over death? Look at the empty tomb.
  • Want to understand the holiness and mercy of God? Look at how Jesus walked this earth.

Paul reinforces this truth later in the same letter, writing, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9). The writer of Hebrews echoes this exact sentiment, declaring of Jesus, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever” (Hebrews 1:8).

What This Means for Us Today

Understanding that the full measure of God dwells in Jesus changes how we approach our daily lives.

  1. We have complete access to God. We don’t have to jump through spiritual hoops or look for secret knowledge to find God. He revealed Himself completely in Jesus. When you look at Jesus, the mystery of who God is is unveiled.
  2. We are made complete in Him. Because the fullness of God is in Jesus, and Jesus lives in those who follow Him, we lack nothing. We don’t need the world’s validation, empty philosophies, or material success to complete us. Our identity and spiritual fulfillment are entirely secure in Christ.

Today, take comfort in the fact that the Savior who holds your life in His hands is not a secondary power. He is the sovereign, supreme, and fully divine Lord of all.

A Closing Prayer

Father God,

We stand in awe of the mystery and majesty of Jesus Christ. Thank You for revealing Your heart, Your power, and Your ultimate love to us through Your Son. We praise You that in Christ, Your absolute fullness lives, reigns, and breathes.

Forgive us for the times we treat Jesus as anything less than who He truly is—the almighty, fully divine Lord of our lives. Help us to rest in His completeness today, knowing that because His fullness dwells in us, we lack no good thing. May our lives reflect His glory, His grace, and His truth to the world around us.

In the holy and supreme name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
