Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Rooted and Built Up in Him: The Secret to an Unshakeable Faith

We live in a world that constantly shifts. Trends come and go, cultural standards change overnight, and the storms of life can hit us without warning. If our lives are anchored to these temporary things, we will inevitably find ourselves tossed around by every wave.

So, how do we find stability when everything around us feels like sinking sand?

The Apostle Paul gives us a beautiful, vivid blueprint in Colossians 2:7:

“Rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” (Colossians 2:7, NIV)

This single verse contains a powerful progression for our spiritual lives. It reminds us that a strong, vibrant faith doesn’t happen by accident. It is the result of intention, growth, and continuous dependency on Jesus Christ.

Let’s look closer at the three phases of growth Paul outlines for us.

1. Rooted in Him

Paul begins by using an agricultural illustration: we are to be rooted. Think of a massive, ancient oak tree. What keeps it standing during a fierce storm isn’t the size of its branches, but the depth of its roots.

To be rooted in Christ means drawing our spiritual strength, identity, and life-giving nourishment directly from Him. When we spend time in His Word, sit in prayer, and trust in His character, our roots grow deep into the soil of His love.

The Takeaway: Deep roots keep you from being fooled by false philosophies or easily shaken when trials come.

2. Built Up in Him

Next, Paul shifts from agriculture to architecture: we are being built up. While being rooted is hidden beneath the soil, being built up is the visible structure above ground.

This refers to our spiritual maturity. Our foundation is already laid—Jesus Christ—but we are continually called to build upon that foundation through daily obedience, Christian instruction, and experience. As we grow, our thoughts, decisions, and actions begin to look more like Him.

The Takeaway: Spiritual growth is a lifetime process. Every day is an opportunity to let God add another brick of character, love, and wisdom to your life.

3. Overflowing with Thankfulness

What is the natural byproduct of a life that is deeply rooted and securely built up? Thankfulness.

Paul writes that we should be overflowing with thankfulness. This isn’t just a polite “thank you” when things go well. It is a continuous, abundant state of gratitude that pours out of our lives because we recognize the sheer magnitude of God’s grace and salvation. When Christ is your anchor, you can find a reason to praise Him in every single season.

The Takeaway: Gratitude protects our hearts. It shifts our focus away from what we lack and places it entirely on who God is and what He has already done.

Live it Out

A plant cannot grow if it is constantly being uprooted and replanted in different soil. Today, commit to staying planted in Jesus. Let go of the need to find validation or security in the world, and let your roots sink deep into the unchanging truth of His Word.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who is our firm foundation. Lord, we ask today that You would cause our roots to grow deep down into You. Help us to draw our daily strength, nourishment, and identity from Your love alone, so that our faith remains unwavering.

Build us up, Lord. Strengthen our faith through Your Word, and let our daily thoughts and actions reflect Your character. When the storms of life hit, let us stand firm, anchored securely in Your truth.

Finally, we pray that our hearts would overflow with gratitude. Remind us continually of Your abounding goodness and grace, and let our lives be a living testimony of praise to You.

In Jesus’ holy name we pray, Amen.
