FORGIVE / COLOSSSIANS 3:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 3:13

Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Choosing Freedom: What It Truly Means to Forgive (Colossians 3:13)

We’ve all been there. Someone says something careless, breaks a promise, or betrays our trust entirely. In those moments, the natural human response is to build a wall, nurse the grievance, and wait for an apology that may never actually come.

But holding onto a grudge doesn’t punish the person who hurt us; it holds our own hearts captive.

If you are currently carrying the heavy weight of resentment, Scripture offers a path to absolute freedom. In his letter to the Colossians, the apostle Paul provides a radical, counter-cultural framework for our relationships:

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” — Colossians 3:13 (NIV)

When we unpack this single verse, we discover three powerful truths that can transform how we handle conflict and emotional pain.

1. Make Allowance for Imperfection

The command to “bear with each other” means to extend patience, tolerance, and grace to the people around us. It recognizes a basic truth: people are imperfect, and they will flip up. Healthy relationships require us to cut people some slack and realize that their bad day, short temper, or clumsy wording isn’t always a personal attack on us.

2. Set Your Internal Standard

Paul writes that we are to forgive if we have a “grievance against someone.” Notice that he doesn’t say “forgive them after they see the error of their ways and beg for mercy.” If we base our obedience on the offender’s response, we give them total control over our peace. True biblical forgiveness is a choice we make between ourselves and God to release the desire for revenge, leaving justice in His hands.

3. Look at the Cross First

The true standard of Christian forgiveness is beautifully simple yet incredibly demanding: “Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” How does God forgive us? Completely. Continuously. Unconditionally. He didn’t wait for us to get our lives perfectly together before offering grace. Remembering the staggering depth of our own debt that Jesus canceled on the cross changes our perspective. It makes it impossible to withhold grace from someone else.

Forgiveness vs. Reconciliation

It is vital to clarify a common misunderstanding: forgiving someone does not mean you have to tolerate abuse or live without boundaries. Forgiveness is an internal release of bitterness; reconciliation is an external rebuilding of trust. You can completely forgive someone from a distance while keeping healthy boundaries in place to protect your well-being.

Forgiveness is not about letting the other person off the hook. It is about letting yourself out of the prison of bitterness. Today, choose to drop the heavy weights you were never meant to carry, and walk forward in the freedom of Christ.

A Closing Prayer for the Strength to Forgive

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the overwhelming depth of Your love and the grace You have poured out on me through Jesus Christ. You know my heart, and You know the exact hurts and grievances I am struggling to carry right now. My spirit feels exhausted from holding onto this resentment.

Lord, I admit that forgiving feels incredibly difficult. By faith, I choose to obey Your Word today. I lay down my anger, my bitterness, and my desire to see them pay for what they did. I place the person who hurt me into Your hands, trusting You entirely with justice and healing.

Please wash away the resentment eating at my soul and replace it with Your perfect peace. Soften my heart to bear with others, and remind me daily of how much I have been forgiven.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
