START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 3:4
When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Christ, Who Is Your Life: Finding the Heart of Colossians 3:4
In our journey of faith, it is incredibly easy to treat Christianity as a list of boxes to check. We know that maintaining a right basis of belief is crucial (2 Timothy 1:13-14), and we strive daily to pursue a holy life of obedience (Colossians 3:5-17; John 14:15). These are essential pillars of our ongoing relationship with God. Yet, if we are not careful, we can focus so much on the rules of the faith that we miss the Person of the faith.
True spiritual life is not merely a moral code or a theological framework—it is friendship with and love for Christ as a Person. He must always be central (Romans 3:22).
When the Apostle Paul wrote his letter to the Colossians, he didn’t just give them a checklist of duties. Instead, he constantly pulled their attention back to their personal unity, companionship, and dynamic interaction with Jesus (Colossians 1:27; Colossians 2:6-7, 10, 20). This beautiful reality culminates in a breathtaking declaration in Colossians 3:4:
“When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:4 NIV)
More Than a Gift—He is the Source
Notice the profound phrasing Paul uses here. He does not simply write that Christ gives you life, or that Christ promises you a better life. He declares that Christ is your life.
When you place your faith in Jesus, an extraordinary spiritual exchange takes place. Your old self, with its failures, guilt, and earth-bound identity, dies. Your new, true life is immediately hidden, protected, and secured deep within Christ. Practically speaking, you no longer possess a separate identity detached from Him; your existence is entirely intertwined with His. He is the very oxygen of your soul, the source of your joy, and the anchor of your daily reality.
Cultivating Companionable Intimacy
Because Christ is your life, your spiritual walk should feel less like a rigid classroom and more like a vibrant companionship. Paul reminds us throughout Colossians that we are meant to “walk in Him,” “rooted and built up in Him,” and complete in Him.
If you find yourself feeling burned out by religion, take a step back and evaluate where your focus lies.
- Are you seeking a doctrine, or are you seeking a Friend?
- Are you modifying your behavior out of sheer duty, or is it an overflow of your love for Him?
A holy life matters, but it is meant to be the natural byproduct of a thriving, personal love affair with the Savior. When you know Him deeply, keeping His commandments transitions from a heavy burden into a joyful expression of gratitude (John 14:21).
Our Certain, Glorious Hope
The ultimate beauty of keeping Christ at the center of your life is that it reshapes how you view the future. Colossians 3:4 closes with a magnificent promise: when Jesus returns, the hidden reality of who you are in Him will finally be unveiled for the entire universe to see. You will appear with Him in breathtaking glory.
Until that day comes, let your heart break loose from the distractions of this world. Rest in the security that your true identity is safe with Jesus. Seek Him not just as your Master, but as your closest companion, your confidant, and your very life.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful, unbreakable hope that we have in Jesus. Forgive me for the times I have reduced my faith to a list of rules and rituals, forgetting the living Person at the heart of it all. Thank You that my old self is gone, and that my true life is safely hidden with Christ in You.
Lord Jesus, I desire to know You more intimately. Be the center of my thoughts, my decisions, and my affections today. Teach me what it truly means to live out of our personal unity and companionship. Help me to love You deeply, obey You joyfully, and walk with You closely as my best friend and my Savior. I eagerly look forward to the day when You appear, and we share in Your eternal glory. Come quickly, Lord Jesus. Amen.
