WHATEVER YOU DO WHETHER IN WORD OR DEED / COLOSSIANS 3:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 3:17

And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Living Every Moment for His Glory: Navigating Life with Colossians 3:17

We live in a complex world filled with choices that aren’t always spelled out in black and white. From the media we consume to the career paths we choose, we often find ourselves asking: “Is this okay for a Christian to do?”

While the Bible may not mention specific modern technologies, entertainment options, or subcultures, it gives us a brilliant, unchanging North Star in Colossians 3:17:

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

This single verse transforms our entire approach to daily living. It reminds us that faith isn’t a Sunday-only ritual; it is a full-time reality. When we are led by the Holy Spirit, we don’t need a rulebook for every micro-decision. Instead, we have general biblical principles that guard our hearts and direct our steps.

To help navigate the grey areas of life, try filtering your choices through these seven powerful questions:

1. Does it bring God glory?

  • The Principle: Can this activity be done to honor Him?
  • “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

2. Can I do it in Jesus’ name?

  • The Principle: Can you engage in this with a full awareness of who He is, representing Him entirely, and confidently asking for His blessing and approval on it? (John 14:13)

3. Can I truly give thanks while doing it?

  • The Principle: If an activity forces you to hide your faith or makes you feel too guilty to thank God for it, it’s a clear sign to step away.

4. Is it Christlike?

  • The Principle: Would Jesus do it?
  • “Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” (1 John 2:6)

5. Will it stumble a brother or sister?

  • The Principle: Could this action cause another Christian to compromise their conscience, weakening their devotion to Christ? (1 Corinthians 8:1)

6. Does it feed my spiritual life?

  • The Principle: Will this strengthen or weaken your hunger for God’s Word, prayer, and the things of the Spirit? (Luke 8:14; Matthew 5:6)

7. How does it impact my witness?

  • The Principle: Could this hinder your influence on those who don’t know Christ, or disappoint those who look to you as an example? (Matthew 5:13-16)

A Closing Prayer for a Colossians 3:17 Life

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful gift of this day and the freedom we have in Christ. Lord, we want our lives to be a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You. Forgive us for the times we have compartmentalized our faith, keeping You out of our hobbies, our conversations, or our private thoughts.

Holy Spirit, we ask for Your guidance and discernment today. In every word we speak and every deed we perform, pull our hearts into alignment with Your will. Help us to filter our choices through Your truth. Give us the courage to walk away from things that dim our spiritual fire or hurt our witness, and give us the joy to pursue things that bring You ultimate glory.

May our lives be a continuous song of thanksgiving to You. We commit our day, our decisions, and our futures into Your hands.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
