AS WORKING FOR THE LORD / COLOSSIANS 3:23-24

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 3:23-24

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; ²⁴Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

Working for an Audience of One: The Power of Colossians 3:23-24

We spend a massive portion of our lives working. Whether you sit at a corporate desk, manage a busy household, study for exams, or work in trade, it is easy to succumb to the daily grind. When the tasks become repetitive, the hours long, or the leadership unappreciative, motivation naturally slips away.

But what if the secret to overcoming burnout isn’t a new job, but a new perspective?

In his letter to the Colossians, the Apostle Paul provides a revolutionary framework that transforms how we view our daily labor.

The Shift from Earthly Bosses to a Heavenly Master

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
— Colossians 3:23-24

Paul wrote these words to a community navigating rigid social structures, yet his message rings incredibly clear for us today. He encourages Christians to consider all of their efforts and labor as a service directly to the Lord.

When we shift our perspective, everything changes:

Your true employer is Christ: We must work as though Christ were our employer. The quality of our work should reflect our love and respect for Him.
Integrity matters when no one is watching: We no longer work just to please human supervisors or to earn accolades when they walk by (Ephesians 6:6-8). We work with excellence because our True Supervisor sees our hearts.
Every task is sacred: There is no dividing line between “sacred” ministry and “secular” work. Cleaning a floor, writing code, or caring for a child are all acts of worship when dedicated to God.

The Promise of a Greater Reward

When you feel unappreciated or underpaid by human standards, Colossians 3:24 offers a beautiful promise. God is a meticulous record-keeper. He reassures us that all work performed “for the Lord” will someday be rewarded.

Your earthly paycheck might not match your effort, but your heavenly inheritance is secure. When you punch the clock tomorrow, remember that you are punching it for the King of Kings. Work with all your heart today, because your ultimate reward comes from Him.

A Closing Prayer for Your Workweek

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of work and the unique abilities You have given me. Forgive me for the times I have grumbled, focused on human approval, or let burnout steal my joy. I ask that You shift my perspective today.

Help me to see my workplace, my school, or my home as a mission field and an altar of worship. Let me work with all my heart, with integrity, excellence, and kindness, remembering that I am ultimately serving the Lord Christ. When the days are long and my efforts go unnoticed by others, anchor my heart in the promise of Your heavenly inheritance. May my actions today bring glory to Your name.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
