Walking the Path of Maturity: Living Up to What We Have Attained
It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking spiritual maturity is a final destination—a peak we summit where we can finally sit back, relax, and coast on our past victories. However, in Philippians 3:15-16, the Apostle Paul shatters this illusion, offering both a gentle challenge and a firm roadmap for the developing believer:
“All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.”
True Christian maturity isn’t about knowing everything; it is about consistent progression. If you have made strides in your faith, now is not the time to become unconcerned or let your dedication slip. God calls us to hold the ground we have won and keep pressing forward.
To break the cycle of spiritual stagnation and move into deeper maturity, we must focus on two foundational commitments.
1. Practice the Truth You Already Know
We frequently ask God for “more”—more wisdom, more revelation, more spiritual gifts, or deeper discernment. But a critical question we must ask ourselves is: Why should God give us more when we aren’t living up to the principles He has already shown us?
Maturity is not measured by how much Biblical data you store in your head, but by how much Biblical truth you apply with your hands and heart.
- Take responsibility: Apply the explicit commands of Scripture regarding forgiveness, honesty, generosity, and love today.
- Bridge the gap: Move from being a mere hearer of the Word to an active doer.
Before searching for a new, hidden mystery in faith, ensure you are faithfully executing the clear instructions God has already placed in your hands.
2. Break the Up-and-Down Cycle
Many believers live in a frustrating loop: a mountaintop spiritual victory followed immediately by a valley of defeat. This emotional rollercoaster restrains your growth and stalls your Christian maturity.
Your circumstances will inevitably change, and your feelings will fluctuate from day to day. However, your spiritual progress does not have to depend on your emotions. You can achieve steady, constant growth by:
- Anchoring in discipline: Committing to prayer and Scripture regardless of your emotional state.
- Looking past feelings: Relying on the unchanging character of God rather than temporary circumstances.
By keeping your eyes on Christ, you can transform a erratic walk of faith into a steady, upward climb. Let us refuse to slide backward. Instead, let us live fully up to what we have already attained, trusting that God will be faithful to reveal the next step.
🧎 A Closing Prayer for Spiritual Maturity
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the grace that saved us and the truth that continues to transform us. Forgive us for the times we have grown complacent with the spiritual ground we have gained, or when we have asked for more insight while ignoring the commands You have already made clear.
Holy Spirit, give us the strength and discipline to live up to what we have already attained. Help us to apply Your Word practically in our daily lives—in our words, our relationships, and our quietest moments. Break the cycle of spiritual instability in us. When our feelings waiver and our circumstances shift, anchor our hearts securely in Your unchanging truth.
We want to grow. We want to press on toward the prize. Steady our steps today, and lead us into a deeper, more mature relationship with You.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
