For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;
The Gift We Didn’t Ask For: What It Means to Suffer for Him
We love to talk about the gifts of God that feel good—peace, joy, prosperity, and favor. But what do we do when Scripture places suffering in the exact same package as our faith?
In Philippians 1:29, the Apostle Paul drops a truth bomb that completely reframes our relationship with hardship:
“For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him…”
When we read the word “granted,” our minds usually jump to a scholarship, a promotion, or a granted wish. In the original Greek language, that word stems from charizomai, which means to show favor or give a gracious gift. Paul, writing this letter from the confines of a prison cell, tells us that suffering for Christ is a holy privilege.
How can suffering possibly be a gift? Let’s break down what it means to truly suffer for Him.
1. It Validates Whose Side You Are On
When you face opposition, rejection, or discomfort because of your faith, it is proof that you are living a life distinct from the world. Jesus told us that a servant is not greater than his master; if they persecuted Him, they will persecute us. Suffering for the Gospel links your story with the legacy of the early apostles, who actually rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer for His name.
2. It Is Not About Needlessness, It Is About Purpose
There is a big difference between suffering from the consequences of bad decisions and suffering for the sake of Christ. We are not called to passively accept every spiritual attack or torment. Rather, suffering for Him means choosing the narrow road of love, truth, and righteousness, even when it costs us something.
- It’s choosing forgiveness over revenge when someone breaks your heart.
- It’s holding onto a Biblical worldview when culture calls it foolish.
- It’s swallowing your pride to serve others and welcome back the prodigals with open arms.
3. It Prepares You for Future Glory
Earthly discomfort is temporary, but its spiritual weight is eternal. God uses our trials like a refiner’s fire, testing our hearts and reshaping us into the image of Jesus. As Romans 8 reminds us, the sufferings of this present time are not even worthy to be compared with the incredible glory that will eventually be revealed in us.
When faith gets hard, remember that you haven’t been abandoned. You’ve been trusted with a profound opportunity to reflect the radical, self-sacrificing love of Jesus to a world that desperately needs to see it.
A Closing Prayer for Strength and Faith
Heavenly Father, I praise You that You have called me out of darkness and into Your glorious light. Thank You for the gift of salvation and the privilege it is to believe in Jesus. Lord, when the road gets difficult and my faith costs me something, grant me the courage to stand firm. Take away my desire for self-justification, and replace it with a quiet confidence in Your victory. May my response to hardship and persecution point others back to Your grace. Keep me close to Your heart, knowing that the trials I face today pale in comparison to the eternal glory ahead. In Jesus’ name, Amen [0.6.6].
