SLAVES / EPHESIANS 6:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 6:5

Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

Transforming the Daily Grind: Finding Freedom in Service (Ephesians 6:5)

When we open the pages of Scripture and encounter passages like Ephesians 6:5, it is natural to feel a sense of hesitation or friction. The verse reads: “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.” In our modern world, the historical weight of slavery represents profound injustice and cruelty. Encountering this word in ancient texts requires us to slow down, lean into the cultural context, and ask what the Holy Spirit is teaching us about the nature of our hearts today.

The Context of the Ancient World

In the first-century Roman Empire, slavery was an deeply entrenched economic and social system, vastly different from the race-based chattel slavery of the transatlantic trade, though still marked by vulnerability and a complete lack of personal autonomy.

The Apostle Paul did not write this letter as a political revolutionary seeking to dismantle the Roman empire overnight. Instead, he introduced a quiet, explosive spiritual revolution from the inside out. By addressing servants directly—an unprecedented move in a society that viewed them as mere property—Paul restored their dignity. He told them that their daily, grueling labor was not meaningless. In fact, it could be elevated to an act of holy worship.

Moving Beyond “Eye-Service”

Paul continues in the following verses by warning against “eyeservice”—working hard only when the master is watching to curry favor. How often do we fall into this exact trap? In our modern lives, our “earthly masters” look like employers, supervisors, clients, or managers. It is remarkably easy to perform well only when the boss is looking, or to give half-hearted effort when we feel unappreciated, underpaid, or trapped in a job we dislike.

The text challenges us to change our ultimate perspective. The gospel tells us that no matter who signs our paycheck, we ultimately work for a different Master.

The Ultimate Shift: Working for Christ

When we shift our perspective from “I am working for this company” to “I am serving Jesus Christ through this task,” everything changes:

  • Integrity expands: We practice sincerity of heart because our true Master sees what we do when no one else is looking.
  • Dignity is restored: Mundane, repetitive, or thankless tasks are infused with eternal value.
  • Freedom is realized: We are liberated from the need for human approval, knowing our true reward comes from the Lord.

True Christian freedom is not the absence of boundaries or the elimination of authority; it is the willingness to submit our daily efforts to the Lord, trusting that He values an honest and faithful spirit. Today, let us step into our workplaces, our schools, and our homes with a renewed heart, ready to transform our routine duties into a beautiful offering of praise.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Almighty Master of our hearts, we come before You acknowledging that everything we have and all that we are belongs to You. Forgive us for the times we have given into “eye-service,” working only for the praise of people or out of bitter obligation.

We ask that You give us sincerity of heart today. As we step into our jobs, our studies, and our daily responsibilities, help us to see our employers and leaders through the lens of grace. Strip away any resentment, exhaustion, or cynicism that weighs us down in our daily grind.

Remind us, Holy Spirit, that our ultimate service is dedicated to Jesus Christ. May the work of our hands bring honor to Your name, and may our integrity shine brightly to those around us. We rest in the promise that You see us, You love us, and You reward our faithful endurance.

In the holy and precious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
