START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Ephesians 5:22
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Understanding Biblical Submission: A Closer Look at Ephesians 5:22
The words “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord” from Ephesians 5:22 are among the most misunderstood in the entire Bible. For many, the word “submit” immediately brings to mind negative images of control, inequality, or blind obedience. However, when we look at the full counsel of Scripture, we find a beautiful, dignified, and life-giving design for marriage that looks nothing like the world’s distortions.
To truly understand what God is calling wives to, we have to look past modern cultural baggage and examine the heart of the text.
What “Submit” Really Means (and What it Doesn’t)
In the original biblical context, submission in marriage is never about a strict, slave-like obedience. In fact, the Greek words for strict, absolute obedience are never used in Scripture to describe a wife’s relationship with her husband.
Instead, biblical submission is a voluntary alignment. It is a wife’s God-appointed task of helping and supporting her husband, recognizing his responsibility to lead the family under the leadership of Christ.
Scripture paints a rich, multi-faceted picture of a godly wife’s duty to her husband, which includes:
- Love and Respect: Caring deeply for him and honoring his role (Titus 2:4, Ephesians 5:33).
- Partnership and Assistance: Walking alongside him as a true companion and helper (Genesis 2:18).
- Purity and Character: Cultivating a gentle, quiet spirit and a pure heart (1 Peter 3:2-4).
- Devotion to Home and Family: Nurturing children and managing the household well (Titus 2:5, 1 Timothy 5:14).
Doing it “As to the Lord”
The true beauty of Ephesians 5:22 shines in the phrase “as to the Lord.”
This instruction does not elevate a husband to the level of God. A husband is human, imperfect, and bound to make mistakes. Rather, it shifts the wife’s ultimate focus. When a Christian wife chooses to support, love, and submit to her husband, she is not merely doing it for him—she is doing it as an act of worship and submission to Jesus Christ.
God sees a wife’s daily devotion, patience, and support within her marriage as a living testimony. It becomes an active, tangible expression of her walk with the Savior.
When both husbands and wives look to Christ first—with husbands loving selflessly as Christ loved the church, and wives supporting willingly as the church honors Christ—marriage becomes a powerful mirror of the gospel to a world that desperately needs to see it.
A Closing Prayer for Marriages
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the beautiful design of marriage and for the wisdom found in Your Word. Lord, we pray for Christian wives today. Grant them the grace, strength, and wisdom to fulfill the noble calling You have placed on their lives. Cultivate within them a spirit of love, respect, and deep joy as they partner with their husbands.
Help them to see their daily acts of support and devotion not as a burden, but as a beautiful offering of worship directly to You. Free our hearts from the world’s misunderstandings and fill our homes with Your peace, humility, and grace. May our marriages always reflect the beautiful relationship between Christ and His Church.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
