IN YOUR ANGER DO NOT SIN / EPHESIANS 4:26

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 4:26

Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

In Your Anger, Do Not Sin: Navigating a Powerful Emotion

Anger is one of the most intense emotions we experience. Too often, we treat it as a forbidden feeling, believing that any modern spark of frustration is inherently ungodly. But Scripture offers a more nuanced, realistic look at this powerful emotion. In Ephesians 4:26, the Apostle Paul writes:

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.

This command reveals a profound truth: feeling anger is not automatically a sin. In fact, there is a type of anger that is entirely justified. When we see injustice, oppression, falsehood, or the defilement of what is holy, our anger can actually reflect God’s own heart. Devotion to God’s standard of right and wrong naturally births a righteous indignation against evil.

However, anger is highly volatile. It is like fire—useful under strict control, but devastating when unleashed.

The Danger of Untamed Fire

While righteous anger exists, the Bible frequently warns us about the dangers of human, fleshly anger. Proverbs 29:11 reminds us that “fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.” Likewise, Jesus warns in Matthew 5:22 that nursing unrighteous anger toward a brother brings us under judgment.

Even when our anger begins for the right reasons, we are incredibly vulnerable to crossing the line into sin. The moment we allow anger to control us—rather than us controlling it under the Holy Spirit—we honor our emotions over God.

When we hold onto anger, we do exactly what Paul warns against in the very next verse: we “give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:27). Left unchecked, yesterday’s justified anger quickly decays into today’s bitterness, resentment, and malice. This toxic rot leads to hurtful words, fractured relationships, and painful divisions within the Body of Christ.

Keep It Short-Lived

God’s boundary for our anger is clear and immediate: Do not let the sun go down on it.

We must make a daily habit of resolving our frustrations, extending forgiveness, and releasing our right to vengeance into God’s hands. By refusing to let anger outlast the day, we protect our hearts, preserve our unity, and slam the door on the enemy’s schemes.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the depth of emotions You have given us, and for a heart that stirs when we witness injustice and wrong in this world. We ask for the wisdom to discern the difference between righteous grief and sinful, selfish anger. Cleanse our hearts of any pride or malice.

When we do feel angry, hold our tongues and guard our reactions. Holy Spirit, grant us self-control so that we do not give Satan a foothold in our lives. Help us to resolve conflicts quickly, to forgive freely, and to lay every burden down before the sun sets tonight. May our actions always reflect Your law of love.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
