TO PREPARE GOD’S PEOPLE FOR WORKS OF SERVICE / EPHESIANS 4:11-12

(KJV) Ephesians 4:11-12

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Equipping the Saints: The True Purpose of Church Leadership

We often fall into the trap of viewing the local church like a professional sports event. The congregation sits in the stands as spectators, while a few select leaders—pastors, evangelists, and teachers—run around on the field doing all the hard work. But according to the Apostle Paul, this is a complete misunderstanding of how the body of Christ is designed to operate.

In Ephesians 4:11-12, Paul lays out a revolutionary blueprint for ministry that challenges both church leaders and churchgoers alike:

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up…”

The Role of Leadership: Equipping over Executing

Notice what the text says. Christ gave gifted leaders to the church not to do all the work of ministry, but to prepare God’s people to do it. The primary calling of a pastor or teacher is not to perform every service, visit every hospital bed, and manage every program. Their true role is to be an equipper, trainer, and coach.

This presents a profound challenge to leaders. It requires shifting from a mindset of control to a mindset of release. Leading according to Ephesians 4 means identifying the gifts in others, investing time in training them, and step-by-step releasing them into active roles of service both inside and outside the church walls.

The Role of the Church: Participating over Spectating

Conversely, this passage delivers a direct challenge to everyone sitting in the pews. Church is not a place where we simply sit back, consume a sermon, and receive ministry. Every single believer is a vital member of the body of Christ, uniquely designed with God-given abilities meant for action.

To be “equipped for works of service” means we must actively look for where God wants us to plug in. Your ministry might be comforting a grieving friend, setting up chairs, leading a small group, or serving your local community. When we transition from spectators to active participants, the entire church is built up, strengthened, and unified.

Let’s stop watching from the sidelines. Let’s ask our leaders how we can be equipped, and let’s step boldly into the works of service God has already prepared for us.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful design of Your church. We thank You for the leaders, pastors, and teachers You have placed in our lives to guide, teach, and equip us. Give them wisdom, patience, and the vision to train and release Your people into their callings.

Lord, wake us up from complacency. Forgive us for the times we have chosen to be spectators rather than servants. Open our eyes to the unique gifts and abilities You have placed inside each of us. Show us where we can step into works of service, both within our church community and out in the world.

May our local churches become thriving training grounds where every member actively builds up the body of Christ, bringing glory to Your holy name.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
