(KJV) Ephesians 4:13
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
Maturing Together: What True Unity in the Faith Looks Like
We often talk about unity in the church, but what does it actually mean? Is it just keeping the peace, or is it something deeper? In Ephesians 4:13, the Apostle Paul points us toward a powerful ultimate goal: “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
True Christian unity is not a superficial agreement to disagree. It is a shared, maturing bond rooted in truth, love, and spiritual growth. According to Ephesians 4, this deep unity in the faith is experienced, maintained, and perfected through five key areas of our walk with Christ.
1. Receptions of God-Appointed Leadership
Unity begins when we accept and respond to the truth. Christ has uniquely gifted the church with apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers (Ephesians 4:11-12). Their role isn’t to do all the work, but to equip the believers for ministry. When we listen to sound, biblical instruction, we align our hearts with God’s design for the entire body.
2. Embracing Christ’s Spiritual Resources
We cannot achieve unity or maturity on our own strength. Christ has poured out spiritual resources to help us grow in discipline, character, and maturity (Ephesians 4:13, 3:19). As we actively lean into His grace, prayer, and the Holy Spirit, we develop the capacity to serve others and reflect His heart in all aspects of our lives.
3. Standing Firm Against False Teaching
A mature church is a protected church. Paul warns us not to be like immature children tossed back and forth by “every wind of teaching” (Ephesians 4:14). Spiritual maturity gives us a deep knowledge of the truth, allowing us to recognize, reject, and stand firm against false teachings that threaten to divide us.
4. Speaking the Truth in Love
Truth without love is harsh; love without truth is compromise. God calls us to a higher standard: holding on to and speaking the revealed truth of His Word in an attitude of genuine love (Ephesians 4:15). When our conversations are seasoned with both honesty and grace, our relationships deepen and our bond tightens.
5. Walking in Righteousness and Holiness
Finally, unity is maintained when we change how we live. Paul urges us to put off our old ways and live in “true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24). As individual Christians within a community commit to personal holiness, the entire church is built up spiritually, experiencing health and growth on every level (Ephesians 4:16).
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful blueprint of unity and maturity You have laid out for us in Ephesians 4. We ask today that You grant us the grace to pursue true unity in the faith and a deeper knowledge of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to gladly receive biblical truth, lean into the spiritual resources You have provided, and stand firm against things that deceive or divide.
Teach us to speak the truth in love to one another. We pray that our lives would reflect Your righteousness and holiness, so that our local churches may be built up in love, maturity, and strength. May we grow together until we attain the full measure of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
