(KJV) Ephesians 4:4-6
There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Anchored in the One True Lord: The Foundation of Christian Unity
“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” — Ephesians 4:4-6
At the very heart of the Christian faith lies a profound declaration of oneness. In a world fractured by division, competing loyalties, and endless distractions, the Apostle Paul points the Church back to the essential foundation of our unity: the confession that there is only “one Lord.”
This truth is not just a theological concept; it is the anchor of our spiritual lives and the bedrock of the global church.
The Sufficiency of the One Lord
To confess that Jesus Christ is the “one Lord” is to acknowledge that His work of redemption is entirely perfect and sufficient. Through His sacrifice, we receive spiritual salvation, liberation from sin, and the total restoration of our relationship with God.
Because He is the supreme Lord, no other Savior or mediator is needed to bring us to God. As Scripture reminds us:
- 1 Timothy 2:5-6 establishes that there is only one mediator between God and mankind—the man Christ Jesus.
- Hebrews 9:15 clarifies that Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, securing an eternal inheritance.
- Hebrews 7:25 assures us that He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.
Only through Jesus Christ do we have the opportunity for salvation, and only through Him can we boldly draw near to the Father.
Uncompromising Loyalty
In an age that demands our allegiance to various cultural, secular, and religious authorities, the mandate of Ephesians 4 calls us to a higher standard. To give equal or greater loyalty to any authority other than God—as revealed in Christ and His inspired Word—is equivalent to rejecting Christ’s lordship. Choosing other ultimate authorities cuts us off from the true life found in Him alone.
Experiencing the true “unity of the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:3) requires complete submission. We must recognize the Lord Jesus Christ as the supreme Leader of our individual lives and collectively follow His authority as communicated in God’s written Word. True unity is not found in compromising the truth, but in aligning ourselves together under the singular authority of King Jesus.
A Closing Prayer for Unity and Lordship
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today acknowledging the profound truth of Your Word: that there is one body, one Spirit, and one Lord. We praise You for the perfect and sufficient work of Jesus Christ on the cross, which broke the power of sin and brought us back into relationship with You. Thank You, Jesus, for being our perfect Savior and our sole Mediator.
Forgive us for the times we have allowed other voices, secular pressures, or worldly loyalties to take priority over Your lordship. We ask for the grace to submit to You completely as the supreme Leader of our lives. Help us to stand firm on the authority of Your written Word and to fiercely guard the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Bind Your Church together in true faith, that we might reflect Your glory and love to a broken world. May our lives honor You as the one true Lord of all.
In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
