START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Ephesians 4:14
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
No Longer Be Infants: Growing Into Spiritual Maturity
Spiritual maturity is not measured by how long we have sat in a church pew, but by how firmly we are anchored in the truth of Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 4:14, the Apostle Paul issues a stark warning to the early church and to us today: we must no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves and blown here and there by every wind of teaching.
When we remain shallow in our understanding of God’s Word, we leave ourselves vulnerable. Spiritual infants are inherently unstable in their commitments. They are easily deceived by clever arguments, false teachings, and the sheer force of dynamic personalities or polished presentations. Growth is not automatic; it requires a deliberate choice to move from the milk of the Word to the solid food of mature faith (Hebrews 5:14).
The Marks of a Mature Christian
Paul contrasts the vulnerability of spiritual infancy with the beautiful stability of a mature believer. According to Ephesians 4, spiritual maturity reveals itself through three distinct actions:
- Active Service over Spiritual Passivity: Mature Christians do not sit back and expect others to serve them. Equipped by godly ministry, they purposefully seek out ways to use their gifts to build up the church (Ephesians 4:11-12; Ephesians 4:16).
- Pursuit of Unity: They take an active, responsible role in promoting unity in love and purpose, understanding that every member of the body has a vital function.
- Speaking the Truth in Love: A mature believer knows how to hold, present, and defend the message of the New Testament. They understand that truth without love is harsh, but love without truth is compromise.
Anchored in Love
Ultimately, this growth leads us back to the heart of the gospel: love. Our maturity is reflected in a love directed first to Christ, then to the church, and finally to one another. By learning God’s Word, applying it daily, and growing in devotion, we step out of the shifting tides of spiritual infancy and anchor ourselves firmly in the fullness of Christ.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times we have been content to stay in spiritual infancy. We ask that You root us deeply in the truth of Your Word so that we are no longer tossed back and forth by the changing tides of the world or the deception of false teachings. Give us eager hearts to learn, apply, and live out Your truth every day.
Lord, activate the gifts You have placed inside us. Strip away any spirit of passivity or consumerism, and replace it with a burning desire to serve Your church and build up our brothers and sisters in faith. Help us to speak the truth in love, keeping our eyes fixed entirely on Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
