START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Ephesians 2:9
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
The Freedom of Grace: Why Salvation Is Not by Works
We live in a world obsessed with earning our keep. From climbing the corporate ladder to tracking our daily good deeds, the underlying message of society is always the same: You are what you achieve.
But when it comes to our relationship with God, the rules change entirely. Ephesians 2:9 makes it clear that salvation is “not by works, so that no one can boast.”
If you have ever felt the exhausting weight of trying to be “good enough” for God, there is liberating news for you today. True freedom begins when we realize that a right relationship with God cannot be earned—it can only be received.
The Reality of Our Helplessness
To understand why our good works cannot save us, we have to look honestly at our condition without Christ. The Bible paints a sobering picture of our spiritual state before grace steps in:
- Spiritually Dead: We aren’t just spiritually sick; apart from God, we are spiritually dead in our transgressions (Ephesians 2:1-2). A dead person cannot execute good works to bring themselves back to life.
- Enslaved and Trapped: We live under the heavy influence of the enemy (Ephesians 2:2) and find ourselves enslaved to our own sinful desires (Ephesians 2:3).
- Under Judgment: Because of this separation, we naturally stand under God’s condemning judgment (Ephesians 2:3).
No amount of religious routines, acts of love, or devoted efforts to keep the commandments can reverse death, break the chains of sin, or satisfy divine justice. Self-effort simply cannot accomplish what only a miracle can do.
What Only God Can Do
Salvation requires a complete supernatural transformation. In order to be restored to a right relationship with God, an individual must be forgiven of sin, made spiritually alive, and freed from the power of darkness (Colossians 1:13). We must literally be made into a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and receive the inner presence of the Holy Spirit.
Since we cannot recreate ourselves, God steps in with His unearned favor, love, and enablement—His grace.
Grace from Beginning to End
From the moment we first hear God calling us to the daily walk of faith, salvation is entirely a work of grace. God moves in our lives in three beautiful stages:
- The Invitation: God’s grace calls us to repent—to turn from our own rebellious ways and surrender to Christ. Along with this invitation, the Holy Spirit works within us, giving us the very ability to respond to Him in faith.
- The New Birth: When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, we receive an abundance of grace. We are “born again” (John 3:7), and the Holy Spirit comes to reside within us, filling us with the power to share His love with others.
- The Continuing Power: Grace doesn’t stop once we are saved. As new creations, we receive ongoing grace to live for Christ, resist temptation, and serve His purposes. As Philippians 2:13 reminds us, God operates within us to give us both the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.
You don’t have to perform to earn God’s love. Rest in the finished work of Jesus today. It is a gift, pure and simple.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the radical, life-changing gift of Your grace. Forgive me for the times I try to earn Your favor through my own self-effort, religious routines, or good deeds. I acknowledge today that my works could never be enough to save me from spiritual death.
Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to pay the price I could never pay. I surrender my life to Him fresh today as my Lord and Savior. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, and let Your continuing grace give me both the desire and the power to live for Your good purposes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
