(KJV) Ephesians 2:1-2
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
From Slavery to Grace: Why the Unbelieving World Deserves Our Deepest Compassion
We have all looked at the headlines or walked through our local communities and felt a rising sense of frustration or shock at the state of our world. It is easy to look at ungodly pride, systemic rebellion, and immoral behavior with a heart of judgment. However, the Apostle Paul offers us a radical shift in perspective.
In Ephesians 2:1-2, scripture lays bare the spiritual reality of every person who does not yet know Jesus Christ:
“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience…”
When we see people actively living in resistance and opposition to God, our natural human response might be anger or defensiveness. But according to the Bible, the appropriate Christian response is profound compassion and mercy. Here is why:
1. They are Living Under Spiritual Deception
Those living apart from Christ are not just making poor lifestyle choices; they are under the direct influence of “the ruler of the kingdom of the air,” Satan. As Paul reiterates in 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, the enemy has actively blinded their minds to the truth of God. They cannot see the beauty of the Gospel because they are trapped in a spiritual fog.
2. They are Enslaved, Not Just Disobedient
It is impossible to break chains you don’t even know you are wearing. Unbelievers are spiritually enslaved to sin and the ungodly cravings of the flesh. They are acting exactly out of their nature. Because of this spiritual condition, they are completely incapable of understanding or accepting divine truth without the miraculous intervention of God’s grace—His undeserved favor, love, and enablement.
3. We Realize “Such Were Some of You”
The ultimate anchor for our compassion is the reminder of our own history. Ephesians 2 starts by saying, “And you were dead…” Every single believer was once in the exact same boat—blind, trapped, and disobedient. It was only by God’s grace that our eyes were opened.
Accountability Coexists with Compassion
While we must look at the world with pity rather than pride, the Bible does not absolve people of responsibility. God has infused the world with enough spiritual light—through creation and human conscience—that all people are ultimately accountable to turn toward Him.
But until they do, they are captives in need of a Savior. Let us stop treating the hurting, broken world like an enemy to defeat, and start viewing them as captives who desperately need the same rescue line of grace that saved us.
A Closing Prayer for a Right Perspective
Heavenly Father,
Forgive us for the times we have looked at the brokenness and rebellion of this world with a critical, self-righteous spirit. Forgive us for forgetting the depth of the pit from which Your grace pulled us.
Lord, we pray that You would give us Biblical eyes to see those who do not know You. Strip away our judgment and replace it with the overwhelming compassion and mercy of Jesus. Help us to see the spiritual slavery behind the pride, and the blindness behind the disobedience.
We ask that You would shine Your light into the hearts of those trapped by the prince of the power of the air. Break the power of deception, awaken consciences, and extend Your saving grace to those who are still far off. Use our lives, our words, and our love to point them to the true freedom found only in Christ Jesus.
In His precious and powerful name we pray, Amen.
