(KJV) Ephesians 5:11

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

Exposing the Darkness: A Call to Faithful Courage

We live in a world that often prefers a comfortable silence. When confronted with moral compromise or systemic wrongdoing, the cultural consensus is frequently to look the other way, mind our own business, or remain completely neutral. But for those who claim loyalty to Jesus Christ, neutrality is simply not an option.

In Ephesians 5:11, the Apostle Paul issues a direct and uncompromising command: “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.”

Moving Beyond Neutrality

True faithfulness requires active resistance. As believers, we cannot afford to be silent spectators when we witness “deeds of darkness” and immoral behavior. Scripture reminds us that choosing silence is often equivalent to choosing a side. When we refuse to speak up, we allow wickedness to grow unchecked in the shadows.

Standing for truth means we must be prepared to challenge, expose, correct, and speak against evil in all its forms. This isn’t about being argumentative; it is about reflecting the light of Christ in a world that desperately needs it. Jesus Himself never shrank back from exposing evil behavior (John 7:7). If we are to remain faithful to Him, we must follow His example and stand firmly with God against righteousness (Psalms 94:16). To love what is good inherently means we must learn to hate what is sinful (Hebrews 1:9).

The Call to Deep Humility

However, this call to expose the darkness comes with a vital, sobering warning. We must be incredibly careful that we do not get secretly caught up in the very same issues we are speaking against.

Scripture warns us strictly against hypocrisy: “You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things” (Romans 2:1).

If our confrontation of sin is rooted in pride, self-righteousness, or finger-pointing, we fail the test of Christlike love. We must look into the mirror of Godโ€™s Word first. Our voices must be motivated by a sincere desire for truth and restoration, not a thirst for moral superiority. Speak out, yesโ€”but do it humbly, sincerely, and with a heart that has first repented of its own hidden faults.

Let us step out of the shadows of compromise and live as children of the light, letting our lives and our words expose the darkness around us.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Lord, we thank You that You have rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of Your light. Give us the spiritual courage to stand firm in a world that often demands our silence. Remove any spirit of fear, neutrality, or compromise from our hearts. When we encounter deeds of darkness, grant us the wisdom and boldness to expose them with truth and grace.

Above all, Lord, keep us humble. Search our own hearts first. Guard us against the trap of hypocrisy and self-righteousness, and let our lives be a pure, authentic reflection of Your holiness. May our words always bring honor to the name of Jesus, in whose powerful name we pray. Amen.
