BE SURE / EPHESIANS 5:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 5:5

For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Be Sure: The Uncompromising Truth of Ephesians 5:5

In a world that constantly blurs the lines of morality, it is easy to find ourselves drifting. We live in a culture that tells us to follow our hearts, indulge our desires, and define our own truth. But Scripture offers a striking, crystal-clear wakeup call.

In Ephesians 5:5, the Apostle Paul writes with unquestionable certainty about who will inherit the kingdom of God, leaving absolutely no room for ambiguity.

The Reality of Exclusion

Paul and the early church in Ephesus knew a fundamental truth: those who live lives characterized by immorality, impurity, or greed have no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

This standard wasn’t just for outsiders; it applied to everyone, whether they sat in a church pew or lived completely apart from the faith. Paul isn’t talking about a believer who stumbles and repents. He is talking about a settled lifestyle—people who consistently allow sensual or excessive desires to distract them from the truth of God.

The Root of the Problem: Modern Idolatry

Why is the restriction so severe? Paul explicitly states that a greedy or covetous person is an idolater.

When we give into these lifestyles, we show exactly where our allegiance lies.

  • We demonstrate that we love things more than we love God.
  • We prove we are more determined to please ourselves than to please our Creator.

This wasn’t a new or radical teaching invented by Paul. The fact that such choices separate us from God’s kingdom was taught with deep conviction by the Old Testament prophets (Jeremiah 8:7; 23:17; Ezekiel 13:10) and echoed by the leaders of the New Testament church (1 Corinthians 6:9; Galatians 5:21).

Evidence of the Heart

Ultimately, our actions are the fruit of our spiritual roots. Continual, unrepentant sin gives clear evidence that a person is not in a right, saving relationship with God. Instead, it shows a heart separated from God and eternal life (John 8:42; 1 John 3:15).

True salvation brings transformation. It changes our desires from wanting what pleases the flesh to wanting what pleases the Father. Today, let us examine our hearts, lay down our idols, and walk in the certainty of God’s truth.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Your Word is a lamp to our feet and a sharp mirror to our souls. We ask that You search our hearts today. Forgive us for the times we have allowed excessive desires, greed, or impurity to distract us from Your truth. Do not let us be deceived by the culture around us or the compromises of our own hearts.

Align our affections with Your will. Grant us the grace and strength to love You above all things, choosing to please You rather than ourselves. Thank You for the gift of salvation that transforms us from the inside out. We pray that our lives would bear good fruit, reflecting the kingdom to which we belong. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
