Husbands, Love Your Wives: The High Calling of Sacrificial Leadership

When we think of biblical marriage, our minds often jump straight to the word “submission.” For generations, Ephesians 5 has been a focal point of intense discussion, often with a heavy emphasis on what is required of wives. But if we stop reading there, we miss the most revolutionary, counter-cultural command in the entire passage.

In Ephesians 5:25-28, the Apostle Paul delivers a radical charge that completely reframes our understanding of authority and leadership at home: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…”

The truth is, submission in the marriage relationship is not the attitude required only of wives

. In fact, as the head of the home, the husband is called to take the lead in submitting to and serving the best interests of his wife and children.

The Extreme Challenge of Christlike Love

To truly grasp the weight of this command, look at the standard set for husbands. It isn’t a passive, comfortable love. It is an extreme challenge.

  • It is sacrificial: A husband is charged to love his wife “just as Christ loved the church.” Christ didn’t demand to be served; He chose to bleed, suffer, and die to protect and cherish His bride.
  • It is intentional: A husband’s primary mission is to help his wife fulfill her God-given roles at home, in the church, and in all aspects of life. His leadership is measured by how much she thrives.
  • It is a higher standard of devotion: While it is hardly possible for any human to love perfectly, the husband is called to follow Christ’s example of self-sacrificing love.

Of course, this does not mean placing any person above God. Rather, it means that a husband’s love for his wife should be a living, breathing reflection of the Gospel. In this way, the husband is actually called to a more extreme expression of submission and devotion than is the wife. He is asked to lay down his life, his preferences, and his ego every single day.

Redefining Headship as Servant Leadership

True biblical headship is not about control, dominance, or getting your own way. If Christ is the model for a husband’s headship, then headship means putting yourself last so your family can come first.

When a husband leads through the lens of Ephesians 5, his leadership looks like washing feet, carrying burdens, and constantly asking, “How can I serve you today?” It is an active, protective, and nurturing love that makes it safe for a wife to trust his leadership. When a husband loves like Christ, submission is no longer a battle of wills—it becomes a beautiful, harmonious dance of mutual honor.

A Closing Prayer for Husbands and Marriages

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the beautiful blueprint of marriage that You have given us in Your Word. Today, we pray specifically for husbands. Lord, the calling You have placed on their lives is immense. To love a wife as Christ loves the church requires a strength that can only come from Your Holy Spirit.

Grant husbands the grace, humility, and courage to lead through sacrificial love. Give them a heart that seeks to serve rather than dominate, and a desire to build up their wives in every area of life. Help them to model Your patience, Your kindness, and Your unconditional grace daily.

We pray for marriages everywhere. Protect them from the distractions and pressures of this world. Let our homes be places where Your love is visible, where mutual respect thrives, and where Christ is glorified above all else.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
