START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION
(KJV) Ephesians 6:4
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
The Heart of Fatherhood: Reflecting the Ultimate Father
Parenting is one of life’s most profound responsibilities, and Scripture offers a timeless blueprint for navigating its unique challenges. In Ephesians 6:4, the Apostle Paul delivers a concise yet revolutionary instruction that shifts the paradigm of the ancient household:
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
This passage provides two fundamental pillars for godly fatherhood, Balancing correction with immense care.
1. The Warning: Do Not Provoke
Paul commands fathers to avoid breaking their children’s spirits with unachievable demands or harsh, reactive discipline. When we lead out of frustration or anger, our words pierce deeply, potentially damaging a child’s view of both their earthly dad and their Heavenly Father.
2. The Mandate: Nourish and Instruct
Instead of exasperation, fathers are called to “bring them up”—a phrase that literally implies providing tender spiritual nourishment. This involves intentional instruction, skill-building, and consistent personal example, showing our kids what it looks like to treasure Christ daily.
By trading a stress-filled, rigid atmosphere for a home rooted in grace, a father becomes a sanctuary for his children, guiding them by the hand in the ways of the Master.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful gift of family and for modeling perfect fatherhood to us through Your unmatched tenderness, mercy, and grace. We lift up fathers everywhere today, asking that You grant them supernatural wisdom, patience, and humility.
Forgive us for the moments we allow frustration to guide our homes, and help us to never exasperate or discourage the children placed in our care. Guard our tongues and anchor our actions so that we mirror Your heart. Equip every dad to lead with protective strength and gentle instruction, providing a refuge where the next generation can firmly grow to know and love Jesus Christ.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
