START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Colossians 3:25
But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.
No Partiality: Understanding the Gravity of How We Treat Others (Colossians 3:25)
We live in a world fragmented by broken relationships. Look around our families, churches, schools, and workplaces, and you will see the visible scars of unfairness, gossip, and mistreatment. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are called to a completely different standard. In Colossians 3:12-25, the Apostle Paul lays out a beautiful framework for Christian relationships rooted in love, justice, and mutual respect.
But tucked into the end of this practical guide is a sobering warning that we cannot afford to skip: “For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.” (Colossians 3:25)
This single verse serves as a powerful reality check for how we treat the people around us. If we truly take these words to heart, they have the power to eliminate the unloving and unjust behavior that so often sneaks into our daily social interactions.
1. Mistreatment is a Serious Matter
It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking our daily interactions don’t carry eternal weight. We might justify a sharp word to a spouse, unfair treatment of an employee, or exclusion of a brother or sister in Christ. However, Scripture reminds us that the mistreatment of others is a serious matter that directly affects our future accountability. As 2 Corinthians 5:10 tells us, we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ to receive what is due for what we have done in the body, whether good or evil. Our faith should transform how we treat people on Monday morning, not just how we worship on Sunday.
2. God Sees Without Bias
Human systems of justice are often swayed by status, wealth, or favoritism, but God’s courtroom knows no partiality. Colossians 3:25 promises that anyone who does wrong will be repaid for that wrong, without bias. This truth echoes throughout the entire biblical narrative, from the Old Testament to the New (Deuteronomy 10:17; 2 Chronicles 19:7; Acts 10:34; Romans 2:11). God does not give a pass to believers who abuse their power or mistreat others. He is a perfectly just Judge.
3. There is a Reward for Goodness
Thankfully, accountability cuts both ways. While wrongdoers face consequences, those who choose the path of love, fairness, and goodness are promised a beautiful inheritance. Colossians 3:23-24 and Ephesians 6:8 remind us that whatever good anyone does, they will receive the reward of the inheritance from the Lord. When you choose patience over retaliation, or fairness over cutting corners, God notices. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Living in the Light of Future Accountability
Knowing that we are accountable to an impartial God should not paralyze us with fear, but it absolutely should motivate our choices. It should drive us to fulfill the greatest commandments: to love God with all our hearts and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39).
The next time you are tempted to act out of anger, selfishness, or unfairness in your relationships, remember Colossians 3:25. Let future accountability reshape your present love. Choose kindness, practice justice, and extend the same mercy to others that Christ has so generously extended to you.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are a God of perfect justice, righteousness, and truth. You see every interaction, every hidden motive, and the way we treat the people You have placed in our lives. Forgive us for the times we have acted out of selfishness, harshness, or unfairness within our families, workplaces, and churches.
Holy Spirit, imprint the truth of Colossians 3:25 onto our hearts. Remind us that how we treat others matters deeply to You and carries eternal weight. Strip away any partiality or bias from our minds. Help us to walk in love, goodness, and fairness, knowing that we serve the Lord Christ. May our daily lives be a reflection of Your mercy, and may our relationships honor You as we look forward to the reward of our true inheritance. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
