(KJV) Exodus 27:2
And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass.
The Power in the Corners: Embracing the Horns of the Altar
In Exodus 27:2, God gives Moses specific instructions for constructing the Altar of Burnt Offering: “Make a horn at each of the four corners, so that the horns and the altar are of one piece, and overlay the altar with bronze.”
At first glance, a command to build ridges or pointed extensions on the corners of a sacrificial structure might seem like an archaic design choice. However, in biblical typography, these horns carry profound spiritual weight. They are vivid symbols of the power, authority, and total protection found through sacrifice.
Power Unified with Sacrifice
The scripture notes that the horns and the altar were to be “of one piece.” They weren’t separate attachments added later; they were intrinsically bound to the place of sacrifice.
In the ancient world, horns represented strength, victory, and sovereign power. By carving them directly out of the altar, God visually demonstrated to His people that true spiritual strength is never divorced from sacrifice. The power to overcome is found at the place of surrender.
A Sanctuary for the Vulnerable
Because these horns represented God’s ultimate authority, they quickly became a ultimate symbol of refuge. We see this play out practically later in Israel’s history:
- Adonijah’s Refuge: When Adonijah feared the judgment of King Solomon, he fled to the tabernacle and “took hold of the horns of the altar” (1 Kings 1:50-51), begging for mercy.
- Joab’s Final Stand: Joab similarly fled to the tent of the Lord and caught hold of the altar’s horns seeking protection (1 Kings 2:28).
To grab hold of the horns was to appeal directly to the mercy of God. It was a declaration that the fugitive was throwing themselves entirely on the power of the blood split upon that very altar.
Our Horn of Salvation
We no longer have to travel to a physical tabernacle or a bronze altar to find this protection. In Psalms 18:2, David rejoices, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Jesus Christ became both our perfect sacrifice and our eternal altar. When the weight of the world, guilt, or fear presses in on you, you don’t have to feel defenseless. You can mentally and spiritually cast yourself upon the “horns” of Christ’s sacrifice. His power is unified with His love for you, offering a stronghold that no enemy can tear down.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful blueprint of grace found even in the ancient design of the tabernacle. We thank You that You do not leave us defenseless against the storms of life or the accusations of our own pasts. We praise You for Jesus, the Horn of our Salvation, who binds perfect power with perfect sacrifice.
Lord, when we are afraid, weary, or seeking mercy, remind us to run straight to the corners of Your altar. Help us to lay down our burdens and take hold of Your absolute protection. Let Your strength be our shield today and always.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
