(KJV) Exodus 18:11
Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.
Now I Know: Discovering the Greatness of God
The book of Exodus is a journey of discovery. Throughout its pages, the word “know” echoes like a recurring drumbeat. God didn’t just want to rescue His people from physical slavery; He wanted them—and the world around them—to deeply know who He was.
In Exodus 18:11, we witness a powerful moment of realization from Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law. After hearing Moses recount the miraculous rescue from Egypt, Jethro declares: “Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods.”
From Hearing to Knowing
Before this moment, Jethro had likely heard rumors of the God of Israel. But hearing about God is very different from knowing Him.
When Moses shared his firsthand testimony—the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and the daily provisions in the wilderness—it changed everything for Jethro. Moses’ testimony proved that God wasn’t just a local deity, but the sovereign Ruler of the universe.
This realization moved Jethro from a passive listener to an active worshiper. True knowledge of God’s power always demands a response of praise.
Written So That We May Know
These ancient events were recorded in writing for our benefit today. We face our own wildernesses and seasons of doubt, but the truth remains unchanged: The Lord is greater.
He is greater than:
- Our deepest anxieties and fears about the future.
- The obstacles that seem as vast as the Red Sea.
- Any competing priority or modern “god” chasing our attention.
Just like Jethro, we are invited to look at what God has done, lay down our doubts, and confidently declare our faith in the one true God.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who reveals Himself to us. Forgive us for the times we treat You as small or forget Your past faithfulness. Open our eyes to see Your hand at work in our lives today. We declare with confidence that You are greater than any challenge, fear, or power in this world. Transform our knowledge of You into deep, radical worship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
