Finding Refuge in the Midst of the Battle: A Reflection on Exodus 18:2–5
In the middle of life’s greatest battles, sometimes the most profound act of leadership—and love—is knowing when to look for refuge.
In Exodus 18:2–5, we witness a quiet, deeply human family moment tucked between the monumental miracles of the Exodus and the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai:
“After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her and her two sons. One son was named Gershom, for Moses said, ‘I have become a foreigner in a foreign land’; and the other was named Eliezer, for he said, ‘My father’s God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.’ Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain of God.”
The Hidden Sacrifices of Leadership
The text subtly highlights a challenging reality: Moses may have sent his wife, Zipporah, and his two sons back to Jethro during his intense conflict with Pharaoh. Facing down an empire, demanding freedom, and leading millions of people through a wilderness is dangerous, consuming work. Moses knew that the road ahead would be treacherous.
By sending his family to stay with Jethro, Moses wasn’t abandoning them; he was protecting them. He recognized his own limitations and trusted Jethro to provide a safe haven while he fought the battles God had called him to face.
What’s in a Name?
The names of Moses’ sons perfectly mirror the heavy emotional seasons of his life:
- Gershom (“A foreigner in a foreign land”): Remembering the isolation, the wandering, and the feeling of not belonging.
- Eliezer (“God is my helper”): Celebrating deliverance, protection from Pharaoh’s sword, and the fierce loyalty of God.
Like Moses, many of us live in the tension of these two names. We often feel like weary outsiders navigating a harsh world (Gershom), yet we carry the undeniable testimony that God has consistently been our rescue and helper (Eliezer).
Safe Spaces and Divine Reunions
Jethro gladly received Zipporah and the boys. He provided a sanctuary of peace when their world was turning upside down. But the story doesn’t end with separation. In Exodus 18:5, when the worst of the conflict has passed, Jethro brings the family back together in the wilderness, camping right at the mountain of God.
If you are currently in a fierce season of spiritual warfare, high-stakes responsibility, or personal trial, remember that it is okay to lean on your community. God provides “Jethros” in our lives—trusted family, friends, or mentors—to hold our loved ones, protect our peace, and offer a safe harbor when we are on the front lines.
Take heart. The battle will not last forever, and the God who delivers you from the sword will surely bring you back together to worship at His mountain.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being our ultimate refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. Lord, we lift up everyone who currently feels like Moses—standing on the front lines of heavy battles, carrying massive responsibilities, or feeling the weight of isolation. Give them the wisdom to know when to rest and the humility to accept help.
We thank You for the caregivers, the safe havens, and the trusted people You place in our lives to offer shelter when the storm rages. Protect our families, guard our hearts, and remind us daily of Your dual promise: that even when we feel like foreigners in this world, Your hand is our helper and our rescue.
Bring restoration, peace, and beautiful reunions to those who have sacrificed for Your calling. We pray all this in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
