CHEST / EXODUS 25:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 25:10

And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.

The Presence in the Center: What the Ark of the Covenant Teaches Us Today

In Exodus 25:10, God gives Moses explicit blueprints for a seemingly simple object: “Have them make an ark of acacia wood—two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half wide.” This simple chest, known as the Ark of the Covenant, would become the most sacred object in Israel’s history. Far from just a piece of ancient furniture, the Ark was the tangible footstool of God’s throne on earth, positioned in the innermost chamber of the Tabernacle—the Most Holy Place.

What Was Inside the Chest?

The contents of the Ark served as a permanent reminder of God’s covenant relationship, provision, and authority over His people:

  • The Ten Commandments: The stone tablets of the law, representing God’s holy standard and moral boundary lines.
  • A Jar of Manna: A physical reminder of God’s miraculous, daily provision in the barren wilderness.
  • Aaron’s Staff: The rod that miraculously budded, confirming God’s chosen leadership and spiritual authority.

The Seat of Mercy and Atonement

On top of the chest sat the “atonement cover” (or Mercy Seat), flanked by two intricately carved, winged cherubim. This wasn’t just a lid; it was where the presence of God rested.

Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest would enter this terrifyingly sacred space to sprinkle blood on the cover. This ritual served to make amends—to atone—for the intentional and unintentional sins of the nation from the previous year. It was a stark reminder that while God desires to dwell among His people, His holiness requires a covering for sin.

The Shift: From a Wooden Chest to Your Heart

For centuries, approaching God’s presence was restricted to one man, once a year, behind a thick veil. But when Jesus gave up His spirit on the cross, that heavy temple veil tore from top to bottom.

Through Christ’s ultimate sacrifice, the true “atonement cover” has been applied once and for all. God no longer dwells in a chest made of acacia wood and gold. If you are in Christ, you are His tabernacle. His law is written on your heart, His daily provision sustains you, and His mercy covers your past. We can now step boldly into the Most Holy Place anytime we pray.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful picture of Your holiness and mercy found in the Ark of the Covenant. We praise You that we no longer have to stand outside a curtain, wondering if our sins are covered. Thank You for sending Jesus to be our ultimate high priest and our perfect atonement. Write Your truth on our hearts today, remind us of Your daily provision when we wander in dry places, and help us to walk boldly in the grace You have so freely given us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
