START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Exodus 23:15
Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:)
Leaving the Leaven: Finding Freedom in the Feast of Unleavened Bread
“You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread; seven days you shall eat unleavened bread as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month of Abib, for in it you came out of Egypt. None shall appear before Me empty-handed.” — Exodus 23:15
Life moves fast, but sometimes God moves even faster.
In the rhythm of the ancient Israelite calendar, the Feast of Unleavened Bread stood as a powerful, tangible monument to a moment of sudden rescue. For generations, the Israelites had known nothing but the grueling, crushing weight of Egyptian bondage. But when God decided it was time to move, deliverance happened with such explosive speed that there wasn’t even time for their bread dough to rise.
They baked it flat, packed up, and walked out into freedom.
Centuries later, God commanded His people to re-enact this haste every single year. For seven days, they were to rid their homes of leaven (yeast) and eat flat bread. While this was a historical reminder of their physical rescue, it carries a deep spiritual truth for us today.
1. Leaven and the Clean Slate
Throughout Scripture, leaven or yeast is frequently used as a metaphor for sin, malice, pride, and corruption. Just a tiny pinch of yeast works its way through an entire lump of dough, quietly changing its structure from the inside out. Sin behaves the exact same way in our lives.
The Feast of Unleavened Bread reminds us that when God rescues us, He calls us to a complete sweep of our “spiritual houses”. It’s an invitation to examine our hearts, pull out the hidden compromises, and pursue a life of true sincerity and righteousness.
2. The Command of Haste
Eating unleavened bread meant remembering the urgency of their departure. When God opens a door of deliverance from an old habit, a toxic environment, or a mindset of bondage, we aren’t supposed to linger. We don’t wait around for the dough to rise. We pack up and move immediately into the freedom He has prepared for us.
3. Not Appearing Empty-Handed
The verse concludes with a striking phrase: “None shall appear before Me empty-handed.” This wasn’t a transaction or a heavy toll; it was an overflow of gratitude. How could anyone stand before the God who split the sea and smashed the chains of slavery without a gift of thanksgiving in their hands?
We mirror this today not by buying God’s favor, but by offering our lives, our resources, our time, and our praise as a joyful response to His goodness.
Living it Out Today
As you reflect on this feast, ask yourself:
- What “leaven” has quietly crept into my daily routines or attitudes?
- Am I lingering near an old “Egypt” that God has already told me to leave?
- What offering of praise or obedience can I bring to the Lord today to show my gratitude for His deliverance?
Let us clear out the old patterns and walk forward in the fresh, pure freedom that comes from Christ alone.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
*Thank You for being a God who hears our cries and breaks our chains. Just as You delivered Israel from the bondage of Egypt with a mighty hand, You have delivered us from the power of sin and darkness through Jesus Christ.
*Lord, we ask that You search our hearts today. Show us any hidden leaven—any sin, resentment, pride, or compromise—that has quietly grown inside us. Give us the grace and the courage to sweep it away and to choose a path completely devoted to You.
*Help us to live with a holy urgency, leaving our old bondages behind without looking back. May we never approach You with cold or empty hearts, but may our lives be a continuous, joyful offering of thanksgiving for all that You have done.
In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
