START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Exodus 20:12
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Honor Your Father and Your Mother: The Heartbeat of Family Harmony
The family structure is one of God’s most beautiful designs, providing a foundation for love, growth, and faith. At the center of this design sits the Fifth Commandment: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12).
This isn’t a casual suggestion. It is a fundamental pillar of a healthy community and a reflection of our relationship with God. But what does it actually mean to honor our parents in today’s world?
What Honor Looks Like in Practice
Honoring our parents goes far beyond simple politeness. Scripture expands on this concept, showing us that true honor is active and multifaceted:
- Acts of Kindness & Material Support: As parents age, honoring them often shifts from obedience to caretaking. Providing for their physical and emotional needs is a tangible way to mirror God’s provision for us.
- Respect & Heart Attitude: God forbids the use of unkind words, disrespectful attitudes, and harmful actions. True honor begins in the heart and shows up in how we speak to them and about them.
- Obedience: For children and youth still under their parents’ care, honor is expressed through willing obedience (Ephesians 6:1-3; Colossians 3:20).
How Seriously Does God Take This?
To understand how deeply God values the family hierarchy, we only have to look at the surrounding Mosaic laws. In Exodus 21:15; 21:17, the penalty for a person who struck or cursed their father or mother was incredibly severe: they were to be put to death. While we live under grace today, this historical context reveals a timeless truth: God views rebellion and disrespect toward parents as a serious violation of His moral order. Respecting our parents teaches us how to respect authority and, ultimately, how to respect God.
A Two-Way Street of Grace
Family harmony is never a one-sided equation. Bound tightly to the command for children to honor is the heavy responsibility placed on parents. Parents are called to love their children deeply and intentionally teach them what it means to know, love, and follow God (Deuteronomy 4:9; 6:6-7). As Ephesians 6:4 reminds fathers, we must not provoke our children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
When parents lead with Christ-like love, honoring them becomes a joyful response rather than a heavy burden.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of family and for the wisdom found in Your commandments. We ask for Your grace to truly honor our fathers and mothers through our words, our attitudes, and our actions. Heal the broken places in our families, Lord, and replace resentment with forgiveness and respect. For the parents reading this, grant them the wisdom, patience, and love to guide their children closer to You. May our homes be places where Your love is visible and Your name is glorified. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
