Thou shalt not kill.
Choosing Life: Understanding the Heart of the Sixth Commandment
At first glance, Exodus 20:13 seems like the easiest commandment on the list to check off. “You shall not murder.” Most of us read those four words, breathe a sigh of relief, and quickly move on to the next one. After all, we haven’t taken anyone’s life.
But when we dig deeper into Scripture, we discover that this commandment is about far more than just the physical act of violence. It is a profound declaration of how deeply God values human life, and a challenge to examine the hidden corners of our own hearts.
The Value of a Life
The sixth commandment forbids willful and intentional murder—taking another person’s life on purpose. In the Old Testament, the penalty for breaking this law was severe. God prescribed death as the punishment for murder, establishing a standard of complete justice: a life for a life (Genesis 9:6). While this may seem harsh to modern readers, it underscores a radical truth: human beings are made in the image of God. To destroy a human life is to assault the character and creation of God Himself. Life is sacred, and God protects it fiercely.
Moving Beyond the Physical Act
If we stop at the physical definition of murder, we miss the heart of what God is teaching us. In the New Testament, Jesus takes this commandment and brings it home to our daily lives. In Matthew 5:21-22, He explains that anger and insults carry the same spiritual weight as murder.
The Apostle John echoes this truth, writing that “anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer” (1 John 3:15).
Scripture condemns not only the weapon in the hand, but also the hate in the heart. Hate causes us to wish harm, downfall, or death upon another person. When we harbor bitterness, gossip maliciously, or refuse to forgive, we are violating the spirit of the sixth commandment.
Protecting the Souls of Others
Furthermore, the principle behind this commandment extends to how we influence others. Jesus issued a stern warning against causing spiritual harm to another person, stating that it would be better to have a millstone hung around one’s neck than to cause a little one to stumble (Matthew 18:6).
We are called to protect life—both physical and spiritual. This means our words, actions, and influences should build people up rather than tear them down or lead them into destructive paths.
From “Do Not Murder” to “Love Natively”
The ultimate fulfillment of “you shall not murder” is found in its opposite: actively loving and preserving life. Instead of wishing harm, we pray for our enemies. Instead of harboring anger, we seek reconciliation. Today, let’s ask ourselves how we can better honor the image of God in the people around us.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the gift of life, and for creating every person in Your image and likeness. Forgive us for the times we have allowed anger, resentment, or bitterness to take root in our hearts. Cleanse us of any hatred or ill-will we might be holding against others.
Help us to honor the sixth commandment not just by refraining from physical harm, but by actively pursuing peace, love, and reconciliation. Let our words lift others up, and let our lives be a safe harbor for the vulnerable. May we be protectors of both the bodies and the souls of those You place in our path.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
