When the World Forgets: Finding Faith in Exodus 1:8

The transition from the book of Genesis to the book of Exodus marks one of the most dramatic shifts in biblical history. In Genesis, we leave the family of Jacob in a position of high honor, protection, and abundance in the land of Egypt. Because of Joseph’s faithfulness and God’s hand upon him, the Hebrews are welcomed guests of the empire.

Then, we turn the page to Exodus, and a single sentence changes everything.

“Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.” (Exodus 1:8)

In an instant, the security the Israelites took for granted vanished.

The Gap in the Story

Scripture often moves quickly through centuries. The length of time between Joseph’s death (Genesis 50:26) and the beginning of Israel’s intense persecution by the Egyptians (Exodus 1:11) was about 220 years.

Over two centuries, memory faded. Gratitude eroded. If we align this history with a 1440 B.C. date for the exodus itself, the pharaoh “who did not know about Joseph” was likely Thutmose I (1539–1514 B.C.). To this new ruler, the ancient administrative victories of a Hebrew foreigner meant nothing. He saw only a growing, thriving population of outsiders that he viewed as a political threat.

By the time the Israelites finally departed Egypt under the ruling pharaoh—likely Amenhotep II (1447–1421 B.C.)—their total stay in Egypt had reached 430 years (Exodus 12:40). More than half of that time was spent under the heavy yoke of forced labor.

When Our Circumstances Shift

Exodus 1:8 reminds us of a harsh reality: earthly favor is temporary. The institutions, cultures, and leaders that support or protect us today can completely change tomorrow.

We often experience our own “Exodus 1:8 moments” when:

A stable workplace brings in new management that doesn’t value your history.
A culture that once respected your values suddenly becomes hostile to them.
A season of comfort quickly shifts into a season of trial.

It is easy to feel abandoned when the worldly safety nets we rely on disintegrate. The Israelites must have wondered if the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had forgotten them just as completely as Egypt had forgotten Joseph.

The God Who Never Forgets

The power of the Exodus story is that while Egypt forgot Joseph, God never forgot His covenant.

The changing of a dynasty did not catch God by surprise. The 430 years were not a mistake or a delay in His timeline. Even in the silence, and even under the whip of the taskmasters, God was multiplying His people and preparing a deliverer.

When the world forgets your contributions, your faith, or your worth, take heart. Your security does not depend on the memory of a shifting culture or the favor of earthly rulers. It rests entirely on the unshakeable faithfulness of a God who sees, hears, and knows your suffering.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We acknowledge that the world around us is constantly shifting. Earthly rulers rise and fall, cultures change, and the places where we once found earthly comfort can quickly become places of trial. When we face our own “Exodus 1:8” moments—when we feel forgotten, undervalued, or overwhelmed by sudden changes—anchor our hearts in your unchanging truth.

Thank you that even when the world forgets, you always remember. You remember your promises, you remember your children, and you see every burden we carry. Grant us the endurance to trust your timing, knowing that no season of hardship is hidden from your sight. Help us to stand firm in faith, relying not on worldly security, but on your sovereign hand to deliver and sustain us.
