Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, ⁷but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.

Multiplied Greatly: Trusting God’s Timing in the Waiting

“Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.” — Exodus 1:6-7

Transitions can be jarring. In a single verse, the narrative of Scripture shifts from the cozy, protected comfort of Joseph’s favor in Egypt to a blank slate. The patriarchs are gone. The protective cover of Joseph’s political influence has eroded. Yet, right in the transition from comfort to vulnerability, we find a powerful reminder: God’s promises do not depend on human leaders to survive.

The Power of the Multiplying Promise

When Exodus 1:7 says the Israelites “multiplied greatly,” it isn’t just a census report. It is the direct fulfillment of a legacy of promises. Centuries earlier, God told Abraham He would make him a great nation (Genesis 12:2). He repeated this oath to Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

By the time the Israelites finally walked out of Egypt, that small family of 70 souls had grown to about 600,000 men, not counting women and children. God did exactly what He said He would do. He took a vulnerable minority and, in the quiet dark of Egypt, turned them into a mighty multitude.

Growth in the Quiet Places

What is most remarkable about this multiplication is where it happened. It didn’t happen while Israel was sitting safely in the Promised Land. It happened while they were living in a foreign territory—a place that would soon turn hostile.

God told Abraham ahead of time that his descendants would be strangers in a country not their own, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years (Genesis 15:13-14). But He also promised to bring them out with great possessions. Both prophecies were fulfilled with absolute precision.

Sometimes, our greatest seasons of spiritual formation and multiplication happen when we feel the most displaced. You might feel like you are in a holding pattern, or living in your own version of “Egypt”—a season of waiting, hard labor, or transition. But remember:

The silence of God is not the absence of God. Even when the text doesn’t record open visions or booming voices from heaven, God was actively working beneath the surface to multiply His people.
Oppression cannot stop God’s expansion. Later in Exodus, we see that the more the Egyptians oppressed them, the more they multiplied. God’s plans are completely bulletproof against human opposition.

Trusting the Prophecy

If God was faithful to keep His word to a fragmented group of tribal families over four centuries, He will be faithful to you. The boundaries of your current situation do not limit His ability to bless, grow, and strengthen you. Trust His timing, lean into the waiting, and watch how He multiplies your faith, even in the quietest seasons.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You that You are a God who remembers Your covenants. Just as You were faithful to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, You are faithful to us today. Forgive us for the times we look at our circumstances instead of Your promises. When we find ourselves in seasons of waiting, transition, or hardship, remind us that You are actively working beneath the surface.

Multiply our faith, Lord. Grow our endurance, deepen our trust, and fill our lives with Your fruitfulness even when we feel out of place. We rest in the assurance that what You have prophesied over our lives will be fulfilled in Your perfect timing. Bring us through every trial stronger, wiser, and more numerous in spirit.
