(KJV) Exodus 19:4
Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.
I Carried You on Eagles’ Wings: Trusting God’s Tender Care
We have all experienced moments when life feels like a freefall. The familiar ground disappears, and we find ourselves tumbling through uncertainty, wondering if we will crash. It is in these exact moments that the profound imagery of Exodus 19:4 offers us incredible comfort: “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.”
This beautiful word picture reveals the heart of God not as a distant ruler, but as a tender, fiercely protective parent.
The Anatomy of the Eagle’s Flight
To truly understand this verse, we have to look at how a mother eagle teaches her young to fly. When the eaglet is learning, the mother will sometimes push it out of the comfort of the nest. But she never abandons it.
As the young bird flutters and begins to fall, the mother eagle swoops down, spreading her massive wings to catch her young before they hit the ground. She bears the weight of their weakness on her own strong feathers, carrying them back to safety.
God reminds the Israelites that this is exactly how He rescued them from Egypt. He didn’t just give them directions out of bondage; He personally carried them through the wilderness, bearing them up when they were too weak to walk on their own.
Carried Closer to His Heart
God’s ultimate goal in carrying us is not just to deliver us from danger, but to draw us into relationship. Notice the end of Exodus 19:4: He carried them “and brought you to myself.”
The wilderness wasn’t just a geographical detour; it was a sanctuary where Israel learned to know God’s character. As echoed in later scriptures like Deuteronomy 32:11 and Isaiah 43:1-4, God’s care is deeply personal. He knows your name, He walks through the fire with you, and He values you above all else.
This beautiful word picture is the ultimate expression of God’s tender love. It reminds us that our obedience to God shouldn’t stem from fear or obligation, but from a heart of gratitude. His love is the greatest reason we have for obeying Him and following His perfect plan (Exodus 19:5). When we realize how fiercely we are loved and how securely we are held, letting go of our own control becomes the most natural thing in the world.
If you feel like you are falling today, take heart. The nest may feel shaken, but the wings beneath you are unbreakable.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the God who catches us when we fall. We confess that sometimes the transitions and wilderness seasons of life leave us feeling terrified and undone. In those moments, remind us of Your ultimate protection.
Thank You for carrying us on eagles’ wings and for holding us close to Your heart. Teach us to trust Your tender love so completely that our natural response is to obey Your voice and follow Your path. When we cannot see the ground beneath us, let us rest fully in the strength of Your wings.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
