LAMPS MAY BE KEPT BURNING / EXODUS 27:20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 27:20

And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.

Keeping the Flame Alive: Our Shared Duty to Shine

The burning light in the tabernacle symbolized God’s continual presence among His people. In Exodus 27:20, God issues a beautiful, striking command to Moses: “Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning.”

This passage holds a profound truth about our relationship with the Lord. While God is the ultimate source of all light, life, and love, He invites us into a partnership to keep that light visible to the world. The tabernacle lampstand was designed to illuminate the dark, windowless Holy Place, showing that God Himself is the light that guides us through a dark world.

However, the lamps could not keep burning without the people’s active cooperation and obedience.

The Cost of the Light: Pressed Olives

God did not ask for just any oil; He demanded pure oil of pressed olives. To get the clearest, purest oil—the kind that burns brightly without producing heavy, choking smoke—the olives had to be crushed and beaten.

This speaks powerfully to our own spiritual journey:

  • The work of the Holy Spirit: In Scripture, oil is a beautiful representation of the Holy Spirit. The pressing of the olives reminds us of Christ’s own crushing at Gethsemane (which literally means “olive press”), through which the Holy Spirit was poured out on us.
  • Our personal refinement: Sometimes, the seasons where we feel the most “pressed” or crushed by life are exactly where God produces the purest oil in us. It refines our faith and makes our testimony burn with a steady, unshakeable glow.

A Community Effort

Another vital lesson from this statute is that keeping the light burning wasn’t just the job of Aaron and the priests. While the priests were responsible for tending the wicks morning and evening, the entire community had to supply the fuel.

If the people stopped bringing the oil, the tabernacle would fall into darkness. In the same way, the church today is called to be a collective light to the world. Your personal devotional life, your consistent prayer, and your everyday obedience are the daily supply of oil that keeps the global testimony of Christ ablaze.

God’s presence is a gift, but keeping our hearts on fire for Him requires our daily, intentional cooperation. Let’s commit to bringing our best to Him, keeping our lamps trimmed, and ensuring His light is seen by all.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are the everlasting Light, and in You, there is no darkness at all. Thank You for Your continual presence in our lives. We ask that You fill us afresh today with the pure oil of Your Holy Spirit. Forgive us for the times we have let our zeal grow cold or neglected our wicks. When we experience times of pressing and trial, help us to trust that You are producing a purer testimony within us. Give us the grace of daily obedience and cooperation so that our lives may remain ablaze for Your kingdom. May Your light shine brightly through us to a world in need of hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
