START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION
(KJV) Ephesians 6:1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Walking in Obedience and Honor: Understanding Ephesians 6:1 Across Generations
Family dynamics can be complex, but God’s Word provides a beautifully structured blueprint for harmony within the household. In Ephesians 6:1, the Apostle Paul commands, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Far from being an isolated rule, this principle flows from a heart of mutual submission and reverence for Christ.
When we look at the full scope of Scripture, we see that the call to honor and obey our parents morphs and deepens as we grow from tiny toddlers into independent adults.
1. Small Children: Learning the Foundation of Obedience
For young children, obedience is the foundation of all future learning, character growth, and spiritual maturity. Because human nature can default toward self-centeredness, small children must be intentionally taught to obey and honor their parents.
This teaching happens through consistent, godly training and instruction. As Proverbs 22:6 famously instructs, we are to train up a child in the way they should go. Loving discipline ensures that children learn the boundaries of safety, respect, and righteousness, setting them up for a secure walk with God.
2. The Growing Years: Remaining Under Guidance
Normally, children of Christian parents remain under parental guidance and authority throughout their youth. This season of protection lasts until they depart to become part of another family unit through marriage. During these years, “obeying in the Lord” means aligning with parent-led boundaries that please God and safeguard the youth’s spiritual walk.
3. Adult Children: A Shift to Lifelong Honor and Respect
Does the command change once we grow up, move out, and get married? Yes and no. While adult children are no longer under the direct, day-to-day command of their parents, the spiritual obligation to honor them never expires.
- Valuing Wisdom: Older children, even after establishing their own households, should continue to show deep respect for their parents’ counsel and lifetime of insights (Ephesians 6:2).
- Providing Care: True honor manifests in tangible ways during old age. Jesus firmly rebuked the religious leaders of His day in Matthew 15:1-6 for using religious excuses to avoid giving their aging parents necessary care and financial support. Scriptural honor means ensuring our parents are loved, protected, and provided for in their later years.
4. The Lifelong Promise of Blessing
God uniquely attached a beautiful promise to this standard of family life. Children who honor their parents will be blessed by God, enjoying a legacy of well-being here on earth and throughout eternity (Ephesians 6:3). By honoring our earthly lineage, we mirror our submission to our heavenly Father, bringing ultimate glory to His name.
Closing Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful design of family and the wisdom found in Your Word. We lift up our families to You today. Help the young children among us to develop hearts of joyful, prompt obedience, and give parents the patience, love, and consistency needed to guide them in Your truth.
For the adult children, Lord, grant them wisdom to know how to continually honor, respect, and care for their aging parents with a generous spirit. May our homes be places where authority is exercised with grace and where submission flows out of our shared love for Christ. Let Your blessing rest upon our generations as we strive to live out Your commands. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
