SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER / EPHESIANS 5:21

(KJV) Ephesians 5:21

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

The Heart of Christian Relationships: Understanding Mutual Submission

In a world that constantly tells us to fight for our rights, protect our brand, and put ourselves first, the biblical concept of submission can feel incredibly counter-cultural. Yet, in Ephesians 5:21, the Apostle Paul introduces a revolutionary principle that serves as the foundation for all healthy Christian dynamics: “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

To truly understand this verse, we have to look past the cultural baggage often attached to the word “submission.” Natively, to submit in a biblical context means to yield one’s own rights for the sake of another. It is not a sign of weakness, nor does it mean becoming a doormat. Instead, mutual submission is an act of strength under control—a intentional alignment where God’s people choose to lift up others, helping them fulfill their God-given purposes.

The Framework of the Christian Family

Paul doesn’t leave this principle in the realm of abstract theory. Immediately following Ephesians 5:21, he applies this mindset directly to the most intimate laboratory of faith: the Christian family.

When family members commit to walking in humility, gentleness, patience, and respect, the entire household transforms. Here is how this network of mutual care is designed to function according to God’s word:

  • Wives and Husbands (Ephesians 5:22-23): The wife is called to submit—to yield in love—to her husband’s responsibility of leadership within the home. Concurrently, the husband must submit to his wife’s needs. His leadership is defined not by dominance, but by an attitude of love and self-sacrifice modeled after Christ Himself.
  • Children and Parents (Ephesians 6:1, 4): Children are instructed to submit to the authority of their parents in obedience to God. At the same time, parents submit to the deeper emotional and spiritual needs of their children, choosing to instruct them in the ways of the Lord rather than provoking them to anger.

Driven by Reverence for Christ

What makes this sacrificial lifestyle possible? The answer lies in the motivation: out of reverence for Christ.

We do not yield to others because they are perfect, or because they have earned it. We do it because Jesus perfectly modeled submission for us when He laid down His life to free us. When we prioritize the welfare of our spouse, our children, our friends, and our church community, we are directly honoring the Savior who served us first.

A Closing Prayer for Mutual Submission

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful blueprint of community and family that You have outlined in Your Word. We confess that our human pride often rebels against the call to lower ourselves and serve others. Forgive us for the times we have demanded our own way at the expense of those we love.

Grant us the humility and grace to embrace the spirit of Ephesians 5:21. Fill our hearts with a holy reverence for Christ so that our service to one another overflows from our love for You. Teach us how to yield our rights lovingly, to lift up our families, and to celebrate the growth of those around us. May our homes and relationships reflect Your gentleness, patience, and peace to a world that desperately needs to see Your love.

In the precious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
