START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Colossians 3:20
Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
The Heart of the Home: Finding Joy in Colossians 3:20
Family life can be messy, beautiful, and complicated. In the middle of all our daily routines—school drop-offs, chore charts, and dinner conversations—the Bible gives us a simple but powerful blueprint for relationships at home.
In Colossians 3:20, the Apostle Paul writes a direct instruction to the younger generation:
“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”
At first glance, this verse looks like a simple house rule. But when we look closer, we find it connects our daily family relationships to our relationship with God.
More Than Rules: A Way to Worship
In the ancient world, children were often ignored or treated as afterthought. By addressing children directly, Paul shows that children are important to God and have an active role to play in the church and the family.
Obedience in a Christian home is not about strict control or behavior management. Instead, it is a spiritual act:
- It honors God’s design: God places parents in a position of authority to protect, guide, and nurture their children. When children listen to their parents, they are trusting the structure God put in place.
- It follows Christ’s example: Even Jesus, the Lord of all, submitted to His earthly parents, Mary and Joseph, as He grew up in Nazareth.
- It brings joy to God: The verse explicitly states that this choice pleases the Lord. Every small choice to listen, help out, or speak respectfully makes God smile.
A Two-Way Street
Scripture never leaves parents out of the equation. Right after this verse, Colossians 3:21 warns parents not to embitter or discourage their kids.
The system only works beautifully when parents lead with patience, grace, and love, making it natural and safe for children to respond with trust and obedience. It is a daily practice of mutual respect that reflects Christ to one another under the same roof.
A Closing Prayer for Families
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of family and for placing us together. We ask for Your Holy Spirit to guide our homes today.
Give our children hearts that desire to honor and obey their parents, not out of fear, but out of a deep love for You. Help them see that structural boundaries are designed for their protection, joy, and flourishing.
Give parents the wisdom, patience, and gentleness to lead their homes without causing discouragement or resentment. Forgive us for the moments we get it wrong, and cover our families with Your grace. May our daily lives and relationships be an act of worship that truly pleases You.
In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
