START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 3:15
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
The Umpire of Your Heart: Finding Quiet in the Noise
“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” — Colossians 3:15
We live in a world that thrives on noise. From the moment we wake up and check our notifications to the internal lists of anxieties we review before closing our eyes at night, our hearts are constantly being pulled in a dozen different directions. We often find ourselves frantically chasing a feeling of calm, hoping that if we just clear our schedules or fix our circumstances, we will finally achieve tranquility.
But scripture offers a completely different perspective. True peace isn’t something we chase down; it is someone we let lead.
Letting Peace Take the Lead
In his letter to the Colossians, the Apostle Paul drops a powerful instruction: we are to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts.
In the original Greek text, the word used for “rule” (brabeuō) carries a very specific meaning. It means to act as an umpire or a referee. Think about what an umpire does in a game. They call the shots. They settle disputes. They decide what is “in” and what is “out.”
When Paul tells us to let Christ’s peace umpire our hearts, he is reminding us that our thoughts, anxieties, and conflicting emotions should not be running the show. Instead, the quiet, steady assurance of Jesus is meant to be the final authority over our inner life. When a stressful thought or a wave of panic tries to steal our joy, the peace of Christ steps in as the referee and says, “That doesn’t belong here.”
Called into One Body
It is easy to view peace as a purely individual experience—just me, my Bible, and a quiet room. But Paul connects this internal rest directly to our relationships: “…to which indeed you were called in one body.”
When Christ’s peace rules our individual hearts, it naturally transforms our communities. It guards our interactions against bitterness, defuses arguments, and pulls us away from division. We cannot truly walk in divine peace if we are harboring resentment toward others. We are called to be a unified body, moving together in the harmony that only Jesus can provide.
The Guardrail of Gratitude
Paul ends this verse with a simple, three-word punctuation mark: “And be thankful.”
Gratitude is the practical safeguard of peace. It is incredibly difficult for anxiety or bitterness to thrive in a heart that is actively counting its blessings. When we choose an “attitude of gratitude,” we lift our gaze from our immediate, messy circumstances and focus on the unshakeable goodness of God.
Today, whatever chaos or decisions you are facing, stop trying to manufacture calm on your own. Hand the whistle over to the true Umpire. Let the peace of Christ call the shots.
A Closing Prayer for Peace
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus, who is our ultimate source of rest. We confess that we often let the anxieties and noises of this world dictate our steps and disrupt our hearts. Today, we step back and hand control over to You. We ask that the peace of Christ would act as the umpire of our hearts, settling our restless thoughts and guiding our decisions.
Knit us together in love and unity with those around us, and help us to live out a lifestyle of genuine gratitude. Even when our circumstances are uncertain, may Your steady presence be our anchor.
In Jesus’ mighty and precious name, Amen.
