PERFECT / COLOSSIANS 1:28

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 1:28

Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

Beyond Flawless: What It Really Means to Be “Perfect” in Christ

We live in a culture obsessed with perfection. We filter our photos, curate our status updates, and exhaust ourselves trying to maintain the appearance of having it all together. When this hyper-performance mindset bleeds into our faith, reading a verse like Colossians 1:28 can feel incredibly daunting:

“He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.”

“Perfect?* If we are honest, most of us look at our daily lives—our stumbles, our doubts, our messy reactions—and think, “If that’s the goal, I’ve already failed.”

But if we look closer at the original language of the New Testament, the pressure completely shifts.

Moving from Flawless to Whole

The word translated as “perfect” in this passage is the Greek word teleion. It doesn’t mean moral or ethical perfection, nor does it demand flawless, mistake-free behavior. Instead, teleion means whole, complete, or mature.

Think of a fruit tree. A young sapling isn’t a failure just because it isn’t bearing fruit yet; it’s just young. As it grows, deepens its roots, and eventually yields fruit, it reaches its maturity—its telos.

When Paul writes about presenting everyone “perfect” in Christ, he isn’t dreaming of a church full of flawless robots. He is dreaming of believers who have grown into a mature relationship with God. This maturity is marked by:

  • Loving God fully and without reservation
  • Striving to fulfill His purposes in the everyday moments of life
  • Moving away from a checklist mindset and toward a lifestyle of complete devotion

Fulfilling the Real Commandments

When our faith shifts from achieving a flawless performance to pursuing spiritual maturity, our daily behavior transforms naturally. This whole-hearted devotion is exactly what fulfills the core commands of Jesus: to love the Lord your God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:30).

Spiritual maturity isn’t about never making a mistake. It’s about where your heart anchors when you do. It’s about a life entirely aimed at Him, rooted in His grace, and overflowing in love toward the people around us. You don’t have to be flawless today. You just have to be willing to grow.

A Closing Prayer for Maturity

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that Your standards are grounded in grace, not performance. Thank You for reminding us that You do not demand a flawless, exhausting checklist of perfection, but instead invite us into a whole, complete, and mature relationship with You.

Forgive us for the times we value appearance over maturity. Soften our hearts so that we may love You more fully today than we did yesterday. Deepen our roots in Your Word, grant us the wisdom to live out Your purposes, and empower us to love our neighbors with a genuine, selfless love. Present us complete in Christ, by the power of Your Spirit working within us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
