START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Ephesians 1:5
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
There is an incredible, life-altering difference between being tolerated and being deeply wanted. In a world where relationships can be fragile and circumstances are constantly shifting, many of us spend our lives searching for a place to truly belong. We look for validation in our accomplishments, our roles, or how well we handle the challenges thrown our way.
But God does not wait for us to prove ourselves before deciding our worth. He anchors our identity in a choice He made before time began. In Ephesians 1:5, the Apostle Paul uses two monumental concepts to describe our position in God’s kingdom: Predestined and Adopted.
Set Apart by Grace
To be predestined means that God determined your destination before you even started the journey. Your life is not a random accident, a backup plan, or a mistake. Long before the foundations of the world were laid, God looked ahead, saw you, and marked you out for a specific purpose. He knew every step you would take, every victory you would celebrate, and every struggle or physical challenge you would face. Knowing it all, He still chose you. You are part of an intentional, divine design.
A Permanent Place at the Table
The word adoption carries profound weight. In the New Testament era, a legal adoption meant that a person’s past debts were instantly cancelled, their old identity was completely erased, and they were given the exact same legal rights, privileges, and inheritance as a biological child.
Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, this is exactly what God did for us. He didn’t just rescue us from a distance or take us in as servants; He brought us directly into the warmth of His family. He gave us a new name, wiped our spiritual slate clean, and sat us down at His table as full heirs to His kingdom.
And the most beautiful part? He did it “in accordance with his pleasure and will.” God didn’t adopt you out of obligation or reluctance. He did it because it brought Him immense joy to make you His own.
Resting in Who You Are
When life forces you to downsize, transition, or navigate uncharted territory, it is easy to feel unmoored. When the world tries to define you by what you do, what you own, or what your physical body can endure, Ephesians 1:5 calls you back to the ultimate truth:
You are wanted. You are chosen. You are an adopted child of the King, and your future is eternally secure in His hands.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come to You today with hearts full of wonder and gratitude for the depth of Your love. Thank You for looking at us before the creation of the world and deciding that You wanted us to be Your children. Thank You that our identity is not based on our own perfection, but on Your unchanging grace.
We praise You for the gift of adoption through Jesus Christ. Thank You for cancelling our old debts, rewriting our stories, and giving us a permanent place in Your family. When we face seasons of change, transition, or daily struggles, remind us of who we are in You. Help us to rest securely in the truth that we are loved, chosen, and held by a good and faithful Father.
In Jesus’ holy name we pray, Amen.
