And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy.

Torn for Us: How the Curtain of Separation Became Our Pathway to God

“Hang the curtain from the clasps and place the ark of the covenant law behind the curtain. The curtain will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.” — Exodus 26:33

In the ancient Tabernacle, a thick, beautifully woven curtain hung as a constant visual reminder. It stood between the Holy Place—where priests served daily—and the Most Holy Place, the earthly dwelling spot of God’s raw, holy glory.

For centuries, this curtain delivered a clear, solemn message: God is holy, and humanity is fractured by sin. You cannot simply walk into the presence of the Creator in an unholy condition.

The Barrier of Restriction

Under the Old Covenant, access to the Most Holy Place was incredibly restricted. No ordinary person could wander past that veil. Only the High Priest could step inside, and even then, only on one specific day each year—the Day of Atonement.

He could never enter empty-handed. He had to bring the blood of a sacrificial animal to cover his sins and the sins of the nation. It was a temporary setup, a shadow of things to come, showing that the ultimate pathway for everyone to come freely to God had not yet been revealed.

The curtain was a barrier. But it was a barrier waiting for a breakthrough.

The Moment the Veil Tore

The only way to give humanity complete, unhindered access to God was to remove the barrier entirely. Man couldn’t pull it down, so God did.

When Jesus Christ hung on the cross, His body became the ultimate sacrifice. He shed His own blood, paying the debt of our sins once and for all. The author of Hebrews tells us that Jesus’ physical body represented that very curtain.

At the exact moment Jesus took His final breath and cried out, “It is finished,” something incredible happened miles away in the Jerusalem temple: the heavy temple curtain tore in two from top to bottom.

It didn’t tear from the bottom up—as if human hands had ripped it—but from the top down. God Himself tore away the barrier.

Bold Access to the Throne

Because of Jesus, the restriction is gone. You no longer need an earthly priest to speak to God on your behalf. You do not need to wait for a special day of the year, nor do you need to approach God with fear of destruction.

Every single believer now holds direct, 24/7 access to the Father. Through the blood of Jesus, we are invited to step past the ancient boundaries and enter the true Most Holy Place with complete confidence. Whatever you are facing today, you can take it straight to the throne of grace. The curtain is gone, and the door is wide open.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful blueprint of the Tabernacle, which reminds us of both Your absolute holiness and Your incredible plan for our redemption. Lord, we praise You that we no longer live behind the curtain of separation. Thank You, Jesus, for allowing Your body to be broken and Your blood to be shed so that the barrier between us and God could be torn apart forever.

Forgive us for the times we hesitate to come to You, forgetting the immense price paid for our access. Fill us with the boldness to approach Your throne of grace today with our prayers, our worries, and our thanks. We step into Your presence with reverence and deep gratitude for the freedom we now have in Christ.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
