LAMPSTAND / EXODUS 25:31

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 25:31

And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same.

Carrying the Light: What the Tabernacle Lampstand Teaches Us Today

When walking through a dark room, even the tiniest flicker of light instantly changes your perspective. It guides your steps, dispels shadows, and brings a sense of security. In the Old Testament, God used a beautiful, physical object to convey this exact spiritual reality to His people: the Golden Lampstand.

In Exodus 25:31, God commands Moses:

“Make a lampstand of pure gold. Hammer out its base and shaft, and make its flowerlike cups, buds and blossoms of one piece with them.”

This intricate piece of craftsmanship was more than just a beautiful decoration. Positioned inside the Holy Place, it served a vital functional and symbolic role in the wilderness. Let’s explore what the lampstand represents and how its burning flame connects to our lives today.

1. The Only Source of Light

The Tabernacle tent had no windows. Without the lampstand, the priests would have ministered in pitch-black darkness. Hammered from a single talent of pure gold, the seven oil lamps illuminated the sacred space, making divine service possible.

  • The Connection: God does not ask us to stumble through life in the dark. He provides the light we need to see clearly and serve Him faithfully.

2. A Symbol of God’s Perfect Presence

The number seven in scripture signifies completeness and perfection. The seven burning oil lamps represented God’s perfect light and enduring presence among the camp of Israel. As long as the lamps were burning, the people had a visual reminder that the Lord was living in their midst. Even when darkness fell over the land, the light of God remained steady and unchanging.

3. Fulfilling the Shadow: Jesus and the Church

Like all elements of the Tabernacle, the lampstand points directly to a greater New Testament reality:

  • Jesus is the true Light: In John 8:12, Jesus proclaims, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” What the lampstand illuminated for a select few priests in a hidden tent, Jesus has now revealed to the entire world.
  • We are the light-bearers: In the Book of Revelation, Jesus is seen walking among seven golden lampstands, which explicitly represent His churches. We are called to keep our lamps trimmed, staying spiritually alert, active, and bright.

Keeping Your Lamp Burning

The priests in the wilderness had to tend to the lampstand daily—trimming the wicks and replenishing the pure olive oil to ensure the fire never went out.

Today, our modern “tending” happens through a dedicated prayer life, diving into Scripture, and obeying God’s voice. When we stay filled with the Holy Spirit, we naturally reflect His truth and grace to a world that desperately needs to see it.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being the source of all true light and life. Just as You commanded the lampstand to shine continuously in the Tabernacle, we pray that Your Holy Spirit would burn brightly within our hearts today.

Forgive us for the times we have allowed the distractions or worries of this world to dim our faith. We ask You to trim away anything in our lives that produces spiritual soot, smoke, or compromise. Replenish us daily with the fresh oil of Your Spirit.

Lord Jesus, You are the Light of the world. Guide our steps through the darkness, give us wisdom for the paths ahead, and let our local churches be vibrant beacons of Your truth, hope, and love. May everything we say and do bring glory to Your name.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
