TWO CHERUBIM / EXODUS 25:18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 25:18

And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat.

Guardians of the Presence: What the Two Cherubim Teach Us About God’s Kingship

When we read the Old Testament instructions for building the Tabernacle, it can be easy to get lost in the blueprints. The measurements, the materials, and the complex designs can sometimes feel disconnected from our daily faith. But if we slow down and look closer, every single detail points to a profound spiritual reality.

In Exodus 25:18, God gives Moses a highly specific command for the Ark of the Covenant: “And you must make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat.”

These weren’t just decorative ornaments. The two cherubim carried massive theological weight, serving as a physical reminder of how heaven meets earth.

1. Visualizing the Heavenly Throne Room

In scripture, cherubim are not the chubby, floating babies often depicted in Renaissance art. They are majestic, awe-inspiring angelic beings who hover directly around God’s throne in heaven (Hebrews 9:5; Revelation 4:6; Revelation 4:8).

By placing carvings of these heavenly guardians on the Ark, God was giving His people a physical echo of the cosmic reality. The Ark of the Covenant was quite literally designed to be God’s footstool on earth—the earthly extension of His heavenly throne room.

2. A Symbol of Divine Kingship and Presence

Throughout the historical books and the Psalms, we frequently see the phrase “the Lord of hosts, who dwells between the cherubim” (1 Samuel 4:4; 2 Samuel 6:2; 2 Kings 19:15). The placement of these beings symbolized God’s absolute authority and kingship among His people.

They stood facing one another, wings outstretched, covering the mercy seat where the blood of the sacrifice was sprinkled on the Day of Atonement. It was a visual anchor declaring that the Sovereign King of the Universe was actively dwelling in the midst of Israel.

3. The Condition of Fellowship

The presence of the cherubim served as a continuous reminder of the terms of God’s covenant. They guarded the holy space. God promised that He would remain with His people, commune with them, and guide them—but this fellowship was entirely dependent on their obedience and the blood sacrifice that covered their sins.

Today, under the New Covenant, we no longer look to a physical gold-plated chest to find God. Because of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the veil has been torn. The Holy Spirit lives within us. Yet, the lesson of the cherubim remains: God is a holy King, and our fellowship with Him is sustained through the blood of Christ and a life surrendered to His commandments.

A Closing Prayer for the Week

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today with hearts full of reverence and awe, recognizing that You are the Sovereign King who rules over heaven and earth. Thank You for the beautiful reminders in Your Word that You desire to dwell among Your people.

Lord, just as the cherubim reminded Israel of Your holy presence, let our hearts be constantly aware of Your Spirit living within us today. Cleanse us by the blood of Christ, our ultimate mercy seat. Grant us the strength and the willingness to walk in daily obedience to Your commandments, honoring You as the King of our lives.

May our homes, our workplaces, and our thoughts be holy spaces where Your presence is welcome.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
