(KJV) Colossians 3:14
And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
Put on Love Together in Perfect Unity: A Reflection on Colossians 3:14
In a world that often feels fractured, divided, and deeply polarized, finding true unity can seem like an impossible ideal. We look for common ground in politics, hobbies, or shared backgrounds, yet those foundations often crack under pressure.
But scripture offers us a different way forward—a bond that doesn’t just patch over our differences, but weaves us together from the inside out.
In Colossians 3:14, the Apostle Paul gives the early church a powerful directive:
“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
The Ultimate Wardrobe: Putting on Love
Right before this verse, Paul lists a beautiful wardrobe of virtues we are called to wear as followers of Christ: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. They are essential garments for daily Christian living.
But Paul knows that even the best intentions can fall apart without a final, securing piece. Love is the overcoat. It is the belt that holds the entire outfit together. Without love, our kindness can become transactional, our humility can turn into pride, and our patience can quickly wear thin.
When we actively choose to put on love, we are choosing the one virtue that sustains all others.
Bounded in Perfect Unity
The Greek word Paul uses for “binds together” refers to the ligaments that hold a body’s joints intact. It implies a structural, unbreakable connection.
Unity doesn’t mean uniformity. We don’t have to look the same, think the same, or come from the same places to be unified. True, biblical unity means that despite our vast differences, we are knit together by a shared, unconditional love modeled by Jesus Christ.
When Christ’s love is our outermost garment, it covers our frictions, heals our relational wounds, and presents a powerful, unified witness to a broken world.
A Closing Prayer for Unity
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the perfect example of love that You have shown us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We confess that staying unified in our own strength is difficult, and we often let division creep into our hearts and communities.
Forgive us for the times we choose pride over patience or judgment over empathy. Today, we make the conscious decision to put on love. Let Your love be the garment that guides our speech, shapes our thoughts, and dictates our actions.
Bind us together in perfect unity, Lord. Build bridges where there are walls. Grant us the grace to bear with one another, the humility to seek forgiveness, and the strength to love even when it is costly. May our shared love for You reflect a beautiful harmony to the world around us.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
