And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

What My Father Has Promised: Waiting for Power from on High

In Luke 24:49, Jesus gives His disciples a crucial command alongside a breathtaking assurance: “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

We often live in a rush to do—to build, to speak, to serve, and to change the world. But Jesus knew that doing God’s work without God’s power is a fast track to burnout and spiritual exhaustion. Before the disciples could take the Gospel to the ends of the earth, they had to wait for the promise of the Father.

A Promise Rooted in Scripture

This promise that would bring “power from on high” refers to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit—the moment God generously sent His Spirit to fill and empower His followers, which began at Pentecost (Acts 1:4; 2:4).

This was not a backup plan; it was the grand design. We find this beautiful promise woven throughout the fabric of Scripture:

The Old Testament: God foretold a day when He would pour out His Spirit on all people (Isaiah 32:15; 44:3; Ezekiel 39:29; Joel 2:28).
The New Testament: Jesus continually reminded His followers that the Counselor, the Spirit of Truth, was coming to abide with them (John 14:16-17, 26; 15:26; 16:7; Acts 1:4-8; 2:33, 38-39).

The Posture of Waiting

How did the disciples wait? They didn’t pass the time in idle laziness. Acts 1:14 tells us that they devoted themselves to united and continued prayer as they waited for the fulfillment of the promise. They aligned their hearts, gathered in community, and persistently asked for what was promised.

Christ’s followers today who desire the baptism in the Holy Spirit should do the exact same. Waiting on God in prayer is never wasted time; it is the laboratory where our spiritual capacity is expanded.

We Need the Power Today

The world around us hasn’t grown any easier to navigate. After all, we need the same power and direction as they did in the early New Testament church to spread Christ’s message and do His work in our own communities and throughout the world.

If you feel weak, unequipped, or tired today, remember that the Father’s promise is for you. Step away from your own strength, gather with other believers, and seek the power that comes only from on high.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a Promise Keeper. Thank You for not leaving us to do Your work in our own fragile strength, but for sending the Holy Spirit to fill, comfort, and empower us. Lord, we confess our need for You. We need the same supernatural power and clear direction today that the early church experienced. Clothe us afresh with power from on high. Fill us with Your Spirit so that we may boldly spread Your message and effectively do Your work in our neighborhoods and across the globe. We wait on You in faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
