START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Luke 6:45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
The Overflow of the Heart: Understanding Luke 6:45
We often focus on fixing our behavior. We try to speak more kindly, react less aggressively, or force ourselves to do the right thing. But according to Jesus, focusing purely on our outward actions is like gluing apples onto a dead tree and calling it healthy.
In Luke 6:45, Jesus cuts straight to the root of human behavior:
“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
The Spiritual Reservoir
The Bible uses the word “heart” to represent the very center of our being—the seat of our emotions, thoughts, intentions, and who we truly are when no one else is looking. Our words and actions are simply the overflow of this internal reservoir.
Contrary to the popular worldly advice to “follow your heart,” Scripture paints a much more realistic picture of the human condition. Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us that apart from God, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Ever since sin entered the world, our natural, unchecked hearts are not inherently good. They are broken, prone to wander, and incapable of conforming to God’s perfect standards on their own.
Without a radical inward change, it is impossible to genuinely do God’s will.
The Need for Radical Conversion
Because our natural hearts are compromised by sin, we don’t just need a self-help program or a set of rules; we need a supernatural heart transplant. This is the beautiful promise of the New Covenant. God doesn’t just ask us to do better; He promises to reshape us from the inside out:
- “I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord.” (Jeremiah 24:7)
- “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26)
True spiritual transformation is a work of the Holy Spirit. When we surrender our lives to Christ, God changes our desires, purifies our intentions, and aligns our inner being with His purposes.
What Are You Storing Up?
Jesus notes that a good person brings forth good things out of the good stored up in the heart. Every day, we are storing something in our inner reservoirs. What we watch, what we listen to, the thoughts we dwell on, and the company we keep all fill our hearts.
If we fill our minds with bitterness, comparison, or worldly desires, our speech and actions will eventually reflect that toxicity. But if we store up the Word of God, lean into prayer, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us, the natural overflow of our lives will be love, joy, peace, and righteousness.
Take a moment today to examine the overflow. What do your recent words, reactions, and attitudes reveal about the state of your spiritual reservoir? Allow God access to the deepest rooms of your heart, and ask Him to make it completely His.
A Closing Prayer for a Transformed Heart
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today acknowledging that You see us completely. You do not just look at our outward appearance; You look directly at our hearts. Lord, we confess that on our own, our hearts are prone to selfishness, pride, and straying from Your paths. We cannot fix ourselves.
We ask for a continuous work of Your Holy Spirit within us. Remove any hardness or resistance in our hearts and give us a heart of flesh—one that is soft, responsive, and deeply in love with You. Purify our inner thoughts, motives, and desires. May the reservoir of our minds be filled with Your truth, Your grace, and Your love, so that everything we say and do naturally honors You. Let our lives be a true reflection of Your goodness.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
